My allergies have been bothering me a lot lately & I've been having some sinus headaches. I had a routine appointment with my GP yesterday & once again he acted very unsure about how to treat my allergies. I've had bad allergies & skin-eczema as a kid & both issues got better in my teens but started getting worse again after I turned 30.
I've been on a few allergy meds for 10 years now & they are NOT helping enough. The only meds that have ever majorly helped my allergies or skin-eczema as a kid or in my 30s have been steroids like Prednisone & Cortisone shots. While those meds majorly help with flare ups, they are not a viable long-term solution because I build up a tolerance & they quit helping. I've been on & off Prednisolone for the last like 8 years. My allergies & skin get better for a while but gradually start getting bad again. I wean myself off of Prednisolone & my allergies & skin have a rebound flare up so I'm forced to go back on it.
Yesterday I asked my GP about trying a certain old-school immunosuppressant as a long-term treatment. My doc's against the idea because of the potential side-effects & because they have black box warnings. I even suggested that I get regular blood work done to monitor for side-effects. I'm also currently prescribed a few other meds for different reasons that have black box warnings for other risks & he's not pushing for me to quit those. I can not play the I'll quit taking Prednisolone card because my docs didn't want to prescribe Prednisolone to me so I've been getting it myself without a prescription. I get blood work done at least once a year for other reasons & things are OK. It should my f#ckin choice since I'm the one stuck living in this cr@ppy body.
Various research I've done on skin-eczema says some immunosuppressants were the long-term systemic treatment of choice before meds like Dupixent came out. My doc mentioned Dupixent & I told him that I'd rather try it but my insurance will not cover it due to the insane cost. I looked up the Medicaid requirements last year & again for this year & probably the year before last as well. If my parents won the Powerball Lottery Jackpot I could afford to spend five thousand plus a month for Dupixent. The only way I could realistically afford Dupixent is if the doc office were to give me free samples which they will not do or I start robbing pharmacies & I highly doubt I could get crinimal insanity due to sinus headaches affecting my mind, I'm joking out of frustration.
My doc suggested I see an allergist but I saw one a couple times as a kid & again about 10 years ago & they were all lost about how to treat me. My doc also suggested I see a dermatologist but I saw about 5 different ones as a kid & again about 4 years ago & their only treatment ideas were creams & lotions which do NOT work for me or giving me one Cortisone shot. I asked the derm I saw 4 years ago about Dupixent & was told my skin wasn't bad enough for insurance to cover it. It's like my skin & allergies are being looked at as two seperate issues when they're related to each other.
In my doc's credit he said he would do some research on immunosuppressants safely helping some cases of allergic-rhinitis & skin-eczema but I'm not majorly getting my hopes up.
If I could realistically get the immunosuppressant I want to try on my own myself without a prescription, I totally would at this point & simply not tell my doc I'm on it.
