i've lost 90 lb. i do not make excuses for myself.

putting aside the intiial causes of weight gain, there are some things to keep in mind.

something important that people should understand, however, is that i have to eat less food than an average person of the same weight in order to maintain my size. metabolism is highly individual and it is affected by a person's "set point" - their highest weight (which their body will forever strive to regain). it is a fight that doesn't end; i don't get to eat like a "normal" person.

another point is that a fat person's brain has some features of an addict. everyone's brains get a lovely dopamine release when they eat, leading to a good feeling. obese people have to eat more food in order to get that dopamine release, so they feel miserable when they eat less. they don't get the warm satisfied glowing feeling. some people are more sensitive to that, and some have a predisposition to this issue (just like addicts).

i would never look down on a person for being fat or for not losing weight. i don't really like when people apologise for themselves or get all guilty about their weight though, because it doesn't usually work to berate oneself. people who dislike themselves when fat are pretty likely to dislike themselves when thin.

They really should make mandatory fitness a requirement to live in this country. Being fat is a choice.

Um...and who are you to dictate that people aren't free to eat as they like? A bill like that would never pass as it is also totalitarian in nature. And what about people put on medication for their health that makes them gain weight? Are they to be deported? I know being overweight isn't great but you shouldn't be treated like a criminal for it. :/

Don't worry about it, he is from: Location: Cloudsdale, Equestria. I am completely fine if they have mandatory fitness

Lol. I'm just fine with bronies, I like the show myself. It's easier to be fit if you're a cartoon, just gotta redraw a couple lines if needed. :P

I wasn't saying anything bad about the show. Just that his profile says he is from there, and he said there should be mandatory fitness in his country. But that is funny, just redraw the lines

In that case, so is having a cold or flu.

I'm overweight because I messed my metabolism up so much being anorexic/bulimic in my teens. I also have trouble losing weight because of my medications.
Those are the facts.

I don't feel well enough to exercise today.
That's my standby excuse.

I think diets treat the symptom but not the disease. I've been on one or another diet for the last 20 years and most of that time I was on the high side of normal and only occasionally drifted into the overweight BMI range.

The diets gave me a sense of control and righteousness and every time I started a new one and it was working, I was eager to tell everyone about how I'd finally found the inside dope. I knew the answer. Then somewhere along the line I would start to slide. I would try to knuckle down again and I would start feeling CRAZY and I would eventually binge.
This wasn't an eating disorder, I wasn't compulsive about it, but I definitely use food for more than just hunger.

About a year ago I quit dieting and gained between 15 & 20 pounds (I no longer weigh myself so I don't know for sure). I quit dieting because it was making me insane and I couldn't live like that anymore. I gained the weight because I started overeating all those things that I had been denying myself and making myself feel guilty about (like cheese and dessert and wine)

But in the process I've also started taking notice of how I feel and why I'm doing the things I'm doing. I've learned that I rarely eat for hunger. I learned that there are foods I will overeat because they'd been verboten, not because I actually like them. For instance: I don't like Oreos (they taste like raw flour) but I'll sometimes catch myself mindlessly eating 6 at a time when I'm feeling stressed at work.

So for me, the weight gain isn't really a downside. It's instructive and I'm excited about what I'm learning about myself. I'm practicing eating for only hunger reasons and I'm practicing accepting myself and not comparing myself to photoshopped starlets.

And maybe I'm proselytizing a little bit but I'm also not making excuses for being overweight. I just refuse to diet ever again because frankly my emotional and mental health are more important than whether or not my ass is acceptably small. As for any health problems that my increased bulk might cause? I quit smoking, so hopefully that will compensate :)

I've gained 17 lbs since I've been on these antidepressnts for a month. I've taken them many times before and never gained weight. I don't have as much of an appetite and I've been eating less but I feel bloated. Nothing fits me that's in my closet. I'm not going to worry about it though, because I run out of meds tomorrow and can't afford to get them filled again. I can't even afford a weeks worth at a time because it's $58. I've already done the research and there are no programs that I qualify for that can help me with the cost.

Oh well, I guess I'll just be depressed. But I will probably lose the 17 lbs I gained.

Stopping an antidepressant cold can have weird and unpleasant side-affects, can you talk to your doctor about maybe having some samples to step down with? Or switch to a generic? My last anti-anxiety med was only $4 because it was a generic and part of some program through my chain pharmacy (I didn't have insurance at the time so that was fantastic for me)

Okay, so when people mention that I'm looking healthier, I tell them why. Then they respond with their excuses as to why they won't go on a weight-loss program. Here is a list of their excuses:

  • Healthy food is unavailable.
  • Healthy food tastes awful.
  • I can't eat food I don't like.
  • I can't give up my favorite foods.
  • I can't resist my cravings.
  • I can't stand skinny people.
  • I can't throw out leftovers.

  • I'll have to starve myself.

This is not an attempt to insult anyone or to shame anyone into losing weight. This is just a list of excuses that people have given for why they are as heavy as they are.

Does anyone have any more to add to this list?

Thank you.

I've taken this many times before and when I stop, I just stop and I never have problems with it. Some I have had problems with, like Paxil. Plus, I've only been on it a month. I just don't have the money to stay on it, cheaper ones don't work for me, and I blew about $300 of our tax money on a dr visit and the month of meds. Because my husband can't seem to manage to get his hungover ass to work every day, I don't have the money for my meds. He's a douche.

The ongoing insistence on treating fat as a moral failure despite all empirical evidence to the contrary is highly amusing,
as is the implication that people with "too much" fat need answer to ANYONE as to what causes it.

Doesn't this basically hold true for most "extremes" when it comes to how you look, or what you do? When people see a guy who has huge, bulging muscles, they automatically assume that he is dumb and cares about nothing but lifting weights. If a woman is really slim, she must definitely be anorexic.

On the other hand: if you feel like you need to make an excuse about something, your subconciousness might be telling you that your ways are not the best.
