because you said several times that your friends gave you a hard time when you were fat. my friends would never do something like that to a person. so your friends reinforce your negative expectations, and mine reinforce positive ones. plus strangers, coworkers, family members etc didn't treat me badly when i was morbidly obese. i wonder what kind of social situations you were in where you could possibly have suffered for it. perhaps you saw what you wanted to see.

Really? You've been insinuating I'm somehow unhappy because I don't share your viewpoint while criticising my friends for not being slackers, then you cop-out into some BS stance about me putting people down. Well done, I'm sure.

I'd be careful if I were you, she might lock the thread in a huff.

... and back to topic - I was a slim teenager and I've always been relatively fit. I've always loved to dance and I can walk for hours on end. I'm a little overweight just now, heavier than I've ever been, but my BMI suggests I'm obese. There's a photo of me on here. If you see it, you'll agree that I don't look obese. I don't even appear all that overweight and my clothing size is smaller than average. Most of my life, I've fallen into the overweight category, whilst never looking like I needed to lose any weight and sometimes looking like I needed to gain a few pounds. The reason for this is that I'm a mesomorph and muscle builds up without much effort (although I don't look much like a body builder, I think I could manage that body shape easier than most :D ). I know I'm fit because I'm doing Zumba several times a week and I'm less out of breath and moving much more than any of the other ladies, except the teacher. Although I'm the heaviest I've ever been and some of that is excess fat, I'm fitter than ever.

BMI information on its own is useless, a body fat percentage assessment is much more meaningful.
I judge my level of fitness on how long it takes me to recover after fairly intense physical exertion. While I'm sure Zumba's fun, I'd suggest if anyone really wants to test their fitness they should try an advanced spin class. During my first class I actually had to leave to throw up.

^ The Zumba classes I go to are a little more intense than you would think,. It's not just a bit of dancing and prancing. I've done dancing before and this is a completely different sort of thing, but all teachers do different things and some have less demanding routines - mine don't. My classes are purple face and aching limb stuff and even the teachers are in obvious pain, especially at some of the toning work. I've felt a little light headed and nauseous at the end, a couple of times, because I really push it. But, it's only as hard as you want to make it, some people hardly move at all and I they can't be burning off too much.

I know, my last girlfriend went to Zumba classes before work. I know what they involve.

Towards the end of my teen years and into my college years, I was quite physically fit, but wound up taking it too far and developing what I now realize would have been diagnosed as exercise bulimia. It wasn't cool. Luckily for my health, I've gotten better about moderation.

Never been fit. As a child and teenager I was unfit and skiny, now I'm unfit and fat. :(
