The hot towel is for 3 main reasons 1 it softens and swells the facial hair,makes it easier to cut. Second it opens the pores of the face making oils and dirt come off while shaving. Third the hot towel also can be relaxing steadying the shavers hands. I shave with my grand fathers german steel razor and a horse hair brush. Soap i buy goats milk soap from a neighbor. it is creamy it make the razor slide very smoothly. I use strait razor to save time 15 minutes vs 45 with electric as I have coarse hair. I get far less in grown hairs and razor burn using the strait razor. I sharpen every 6 months using 2000, 3000 then 6000 grit paper on the blade by wetting the paper placing it on window glass and doing figure 8's with blade at the right angle for the type blade. It will cut so much faster/smoother if you have never done so.
