USA men's international football (soccer) team have just produced one of the most astonishing performances in the sport's history. They've beaten the World's No 1 ranked team,Spain,2-O in the semi-final of the Confederations' Cup held in South Africa. It's the first time Spain have lost since November 2006,a run of 35 games. The attacking flair of the Spanish was more than matched by the Americans' phenomenal work-rate,defensive heroics and skill on the counter-attack.
USA had already done well to reach this stage with an excellent 3-0 win over Egypt and will now play in the final against the winners of Brazil v South Africa.

I know that soccer isn't quite as popular in the
States as it is in the rest of the world, but I hope the players and management get the recognition over there that they certainly merit.

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

4 games, 3 red cards, 2 wins, priceless.

There were a few dedicated fans watching the game with me over at a local pub. It was a good time. Had to go back to work, though.

Spain looked a little flat the first half but came out with a lot more energy in the second half.

Yeah it was a huge shock. I have been thinking about whether or not to attend a few games at Coca Cola Park in Joburg, but because of the cold and the credit crunch, I decided not to. Spain are an awesome team, but the US did well to beat them. One could argue that the Spanish were flat because of a long European season. But either way, the US deserved to win and I hope Bafana Bafana will do us proud tonight.

That game today was intense to the very end.

That was a brave performance by the USA. Brazil have always been renowned as the most successful and talented players over the years,so for the USA to run them so close
was a great achievement.
One thing that disappointed me about Brazil was their players being so emotional at
winning, they forgot to shake hands and commiserate with the Americans after the game !
I'm sure both countries will be back in South Africa next your to compete in the World Cup.
I'd like my own country,Scotland,to be there as well but we've a tough task to qualify.

US soccer is good, but the US really needs its league to have a larger pool of real, authentic proessional soccer talent... I don't want the league to be full of people which is full of David Beckhams who really do not treat the league seriously (All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us...As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways—on the field, off the field - Donovan). Hmm, the US can really do something, but it must beat good teams consistently with poise and confidence. And yes, it has to make soccer really accessible to everyone, even though I admit soccer might only attract rejects from the fields of American football, basketball, baseball and hockey for the time being.

I personally think that to attract the best soccer players, perhaps financial stability and the chance to reap profits similar to the levels of Spain and England should be done --- yeah, I hope this will happen eventually, with the advent of soccer-specific stadiums as well as the introduction of 'star players' not subject to the wage cap (if the franchises in MLS concerned can afford the star players).

Looks like the U.S. is working on trying out some newer players during the Gold Cup. I noticed that during the Brazil game after the half the U.S. was not holding the ball at all on offense. We substituted too late on offense. We needed fresh legs on offense to pressure the back line of Brazil so the ball control game of Brazil could be broken up more often. Oh well, maybe by the World Cup the U.S. will have a full roster of players that can perform with no drop off in talent when a player gets substituted.

When I was a kid I went to a few NASL games and even saw Pele play with the Cosmos. The first half Pele played for the Cosmos and then the Brazilian team in the second half. RFK was rocking that night! I'm glad we have the MLS and with the soccer specific stadiums, MLS is here to stay! :D

I'd like to see Scotland play as well in the World Cup. I think the U.S. is creeping closer to the level that Scotland has, in blowing leads and losing games. Who knows, by the World Cup, the U.S. may surpass Scotland in that category. :)
