I was under the impression that soy products such as tofu, veggie burgers, and energy bars were good for you. Now, I hear that soy contributes to breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men? Does anyone have the straight dope on this?

There are valid concerns about soy, but only in certain situations.

Soy is a concern for the hormone-sensitive type of breast cancer, but only if you already have the cancer. Eating soy has not been shown to correlate with an increased risk of hormone-sensitive breast cancer. Your biggest risks for breast cancer are being female, old, overweight, etc.

Soy consumption hasn't been shown, as far as I know, to be correlated with the incidence of prostate cancer. A few foods, such as pomegranate juice, have been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and perhaps help fight the disease.

Soy consumption has been shown to correlate with increased incidence of senile dementia in later life.

The emerging picture is that people are now eating soy in far more forms and greater quantities than ever in human history. What if any significant epidemiological effects this will lead to remains to be seen. For now, eat soy in moderation (a couple times per week), and avoid it if you develop breast cancer.

Soy contains toxins like all beans do. Here is a good web site with information on soy -

Basically it is harmful because it is not processed correctly. Yes, soy is very bad.

As I understand it the only problem is with processed soy, but processed foods in general aren't that healthy anyway. People in Japan have been eating a soy-rich diet...well, forever, and don't have higher instances of breast cancer or other supposedly soy-caused problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

There are a lot of people who are sensitive (no soy for me) to highly allergic to soy, so it depends. Yes it can be harmful.

Soy increases estrogen, that alone makes me hate it.

It also reduces testosterone levels - making it a big no no for any guy who goes to the gym.

It's added to do something to the chocolate. I think it's used to help keep the chocolate together. You can buy chocolate chips without soy, if your willing to buy online, pay $5 plus shipping. Soy and corn are big business and companies love to use corn and soy based products, plus they're cheap.

I read somewhere that corn syrup is commonly used in food and that it is very fattening. I have never researched this though.

Corn syrup has glutamic acid(gluten not bound to other amino acids) I can't have it. Glutamic Acid is the harmful component of MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) which is 79% free gluten. Through a loophole companies can claim not to use MSG, and still have harmful ingredients, that contain glutamic acid, because technically if it's not 79% glutamic acid, it is not MSG. http://www.msgmyth.com/ BTW soy has alot of glutamic acid, depending on how it's processed.

The soy they add is lecithin
