Hello

For years, i have had a nasty habit of biting my nails and the skin around them and it has made my hands a little unpleasant to look at. For sometime now, i wanna kick this habit and make my nails beautiful. i find getting a manicure anding them pampered helps in not biting my nails for like 3-4 days but then i would go back to biting them again.

I wanna kick this habit but i have met with little success, i am using willpower but sometimes the habit just kicks in. if anyone has any tips on how to curb this habit i would like to know coz i am out of options.

I kicked the habit by doing bar work. Not only were my hands busy, but there's something gross about the notion of biting your nails right in the middle of a public place, plus the hygiene issues.

The weird thing is, I didn't notice until my nails got long enough that typing wasn't comfortable.

this might be gender oriented, but the only way I could stop my lifelong nailbiting was to have short neatly done acryllic nails painted over my real ones. my teeth could not bite through them and after 6 months I had broken the habit. Or I had created another, not so distructive habit, but I wasn't biting my nails anymore.

I still suck my thumb (and I'm 23). They tried using this pepper stuff when I was younger - but the thing is I like spicy foods.

My fiance bites her nails though.

I kicked the habit in my late teens using willpower alone when someone who I admired told me to stop biting at my nails. I have only fallen off the wagon a few times (less than 3 times).

Isn't nail biting sometimes caused by anxiety? I used to do it all the time until I became less anxious. I still have occasional lapses though.

I bit to the quick and then all the 'dead' skin around my nails until they were bleeding most of the time. My folks used to bat away my hands from my mouth shaming me that I was 'eating myself' . I also bit my toenails and skin sometimes and picked my callouses on my feet . . oh, my, it really hurt, too. sorry if this is TMI, it was Like I was driven to it.

I bit my nails until some man I admired lifted my hand to his mouth for a kiss on the hand and saw my nails and batted my hand away with an 'oh, yuck!' this combined with my teeth becoming duller and not able to bite into the nail is why I stopped. Or that is just when I wasn't compulsed to do it any more. I really don't know which.

acrylic nails they prepare the nail and then form a harder shell of acrylic (they paint it on like nail polish) over the nail. It hardens very quickly and cures into very durable 'nails'. Of course, they can be made quite ornate, but a nice 'male nail' short to medium length is possible with natural coloring to look like natural nails can be done by a competent nail technician if you work it out with them before you start. I have seen a 'full set' cost anywhere from $20 to $50 dollars, with the upkeep, every two weeks or so (called 'fills')at about $15 so you might want to shop around.

oh, and the odor of the nail material might gass you out, so be prepared to do some light breathing.

Lifer nail biter here. I've temporarily quit a few times, but always go back to it. I can't stand it when there's any white on top. There are worse habits I could have. At least I save a lot of money on polish and manicures!

Nail biting has probally been my most noticeable tic. I've been able to control it at home by wearing a pacifier in my mouth while in the house, but for obvious reasons this will not work well on the outside.

I've been biting my nails and cuticles for thirty some years now. Even in public. (if somebody doesn't want to see it they can look away.)

I can't figure out a way to quit and honestly I have given up even trying.
