As I have explored Asperger's syndrome information and found how much of it explains me, I have gotten to the point of wondering how much of my personality and behavior is or isn't characteristic of AS. So I would like to know if any other Aspies out there have had the same experience with Non Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprophen, Naproxin sodium, and the like. Aspirin is also an NSAID but is not as strong as the others and does not cause the reaction that concerns me.

When I take an NSAID, particularly when I take them more than just a single dose but rather for several doses a day and several days, they are very effective at suppressing fever and pain, however I become hyper-irritable and somewhat paranoid. I repeatedly and persistantly experience melt downs. I can't restrain my temper when it comes to verbal outbursts of foul language, and irrationally feel that all my problems are caused by the gross negligence of others or outright malevolence. If I stop taking the NSAIDs, after about 4 to 8 hours I realize how utterly irrational I have been in my verbal outbursts and am quite ashamed of them and after about another 8 hours I am back to myself. After realizing that I am in this mode, I try to isolate myself from others so as not to inflict myself on them and I try to do nothing which is at all challenging. until I get the drug out of my system.

So I was just wondering if any others on the spectrum think they might have experienced the same effect from NSAID's

Oh, and why do I take them? ...... Because they stop the physical pain or fever or other flu symptoms, better than anything else, and somehow I hope I won't take them long enough to get in trouble.

You may want to try an herb called cissus, that helps alot with pain and is a powerful anti-inflammatory. A lot of bodybuilders I talk to use it. Look it up. I've used to myself for tendinitis and joint recovery. I helps the pain a lot. I don't knwo if it'll help with flu symptom, but if your experiencing joint pain it will help.

I did look it up and while it seems to be noted for its benefits, they seem primarily to apply to issues of the muscles, tendons ligaments and cartilage. My most serious pain problems arise from pinched nerves along the spine and other neurological irritation as opposed to tissue damage, so the likelihood of benefit is somewhat low. If you know of any herbs which are more neurologically beneficial they might be more appropriate. I suspect that the effectiveness of NSAID's against such neurological pain may be at the root of why I get the undesirable side effects that I do.

Unfortunately I don't know without doing research. Does your insurance cover chiropractors? Mine doesn't. A chiropractor could help with pitched nerves. Maybe some yoga techniques as well. I can't think of any herbs that will help though. I mainly learn things through simple research.
