I've been in a similar position, but I've heard something a bit different from psychiatrists - mainly that you may feel something the first day even but that it won't stabilize into what you would feel if on a long term regimen until you've been on it for that amount of time - roughly a few weeks.
In my own situation I've done terrible on things like Effexor, enough to where I needed to pull off even within the first few days (ie. my brain went out the window/couldn't string two sentences together), things that were mood neutral like Neurontin or at a different time Concerta, worked without quite the same side effects, as of right now though I'm not on anything - mainly because most things have too many side effects and even that aside my chemistry is too inconsistent to be on a regimen of anything even when the side effects aren't there.
My advice is don't judge it all the way until you've tried it for a few weeks, I think for me Celexa was good for a few days but eventually did what all SSRI's seem to do to me eventually which is bog my mental/social functioning something awful.
