I have noticed that walking/running gait is mentioned a lot as a symptom of AS.

I found my elementry school fitness test results and what % I fit in and I was in the top 20% in pullups and situps, but in the bottom 10% in all the running related events, and that was 25-30 years ago.

I tried to get a job that required me to runn 300 meters in 52.4 seconds. I hired the best personal trainers and worked out and trained hard 6 days a week for about 3 years. I never could get that time below 57 seconds. I wasted all my shots on failures and didn't get the job.

One of the things my trainers had to work on a lot with me was the running posture/gait. I always walked with my shoulders slumped forward and my hips tilted back. It took a lot, I mean a lot, of practice to tilt my hips forward when walking and running. I never thought this was anything other then avoiding cardio based workouts for a few decades.

Now I keep seeing 'odd gait' listed as an AS symptom. Do any others have this issue?

BTW, I never had a desire to get into physical fitness till I had to go on blood pressure meds and from all the crap speed like drugs they fed me as a kid, I really don't like pills. Running makes it where I don't need to take any meds, so it is worth it for me to keep up with. Also, now that my peers have beer guts and are out of shape, and the running people I know don't care I am slower then they are, they are just happy to have me out there with them, it is nice. I never run with groups, but I typically run the other way on a trail and we meet back when everyone is done and go have lunch somewhere. This way I can do my intervert thing and recharge with the ipod and still be participating with the group. Oddly enough this has given me a fit body that I have gotten proud of since I have worked so hard for it. It gives me something to smile at when going to reunion events when I see all the football players from my childhood obese now and the dork is in good shape. ... I am rambling again

I think that 'gait' just means not quite walking normally.

I've been told that I walk like a penguin (grr) and also notice that I do wear out my trainers in quite an unsymmetrical way.

I am diabolical at running and used to come last in every race I ever took part in...

I think the reasons for it are multifaceted though. I think it's partly due to developmental delay, partly due to poor coordination and partly due to inability to multi-task.

I'd be interested to see what other people think though! :)

While sprinting I think my position is quite "normal", but I feel somewhat odd when jogging.

I know someone else though that runs extremely awkwardly...Almost a sort of hurried walking.

hehe i look like a ret*d when i run but... thankfully NTs are not as fussy eaters as aspies and have a greater propensity to put on weight as they age so i reckon that although i was in the bottom 1% of people at school... i'm probably a bit higher up the scale now in terms of running hehehehehehehehehe!

I walk noticeably bouncy. And somewhat uncoordinated. With bad balance.

I remember a doctor putting braces on my feet when I was four or five. I don't know exactly what for though.

I've recieved a few comments about my odd walk.

Anyways, when I run it's basically a speedy version of my walk. So running is kind of a risky activity for me. :)

in my youthful running years [while in the military where it was required] i had a lope-ey crooked walking/running gait due to one of my legs being over an inch shorter than the other. it was too large a difference for orthotic shoes to be practical. yet they were desperate for raw meat in the army at that time [early 80s] so they took me in anyways, when normally i would have been rejected. i couldn't march well either for the same reason, which got me out of drill and ceremony and into the kitchen on KP duty.

i've since learned how to compensate for the leg-length inequality but this agravated my scoliosis, so i have to wear padded-sole shoes so i can walk without pain. thankfully my bicycle [or the swimming pool lanes] doesn't care about my unequal legs.

My steps are too far apart, I don't know why, probably because of all the walking I do but my legs go too far forwards when I walk, it's good for me but other people laugh at how odd it looks. Not often though, luckily.

I used ot have my feet bent in too, but that was more to do with the way I was born, I think.

I am a strange walker. I toe walk and my arms do not swing on their own. I used to be told I was a bouncy walker, but I do not much do that now... I do not think I still do anyhow... no one says that anymore. I take very small steps and am visibly stiff when I walk. I move like a robot when I am going somewhere quickly. I do, however, run well. I think it is because I am at ease on my toes. Before my back went to hell, I ran four miles a day. I am still pretty quick now. My running is funny to watch though, from what I understand.
