Is anybody living with a successful diet of mostly/entirely eating food because it tastes good?

I'm a little curious about how many Aspies are conscious about their health, especially in regards to age, weight, and lifestyle. I am young so I don't pay attention to my diet (other than making sure I get food in my system). On the other hand, I've noticed a lot of people who are my age/younger/slightly older, and they will reject a tasty meal or they will eat something gross because of the health concerns.

I was reading another thread in the WrongPlanet forums about coffee, and somebody had posted a URL to a web page listing out health benefits of coffee. I am worried that putting health benefits on a "guilty pleasure" food/drink is giving somebody false reasons to eat/drink it. What is so wrong with eating something because it tastes great? Such as soda? Or white bread? Or butter or sugar?

Does anybody here actually have any prominent health issues with common "junk" food? Does anybody here take pills or add flavorless supplements to their food for health reasons? If so, do supplements make a big difference to your health than without them?

I don't just get an issue with fast food I get an issue with anything bread or pasta related. And I don't even have Celiacs. I just get brain-foggy and moody and really lethargic. Potatoes just make me lethargic. Strange thing is that I tolerate chocolate and sweets somewhat better, though still not good obviously, and I gain weight. Oh sweet sweet home made bread how I miss you!

I eat stuff just because it's healthy.

I'm underweight, so I can eat whatever I want, though the most unhealthy food habit I have is using way too much olive oil...

All my food tastes nice, but since I like the taste of garlic and chilli more than most other things it's healthy as well.

I take some vitamins/minerals and yes, I see benefits.

I avoid junk/highly processed food because of the taste  . I love to cook and anything that comes in a can or box - not to mention that awful stuff that goes in the microwave - just tastes horrible to me. Cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients will add both to the quality of food and the taste.

And I don't think I could eat something disgusting just because it's healthy either.

As I grew older I did started to see other benefits - I never gain weight and don't have any food related health issues. But I still see food mostly as a source of pleasure and enjoyment.

I consider myself a ten year old trapped in a 47 year old body, so I eat a very "pediatric" diet most would call "junk food", i.e,
pizza, maccheroni, hamburgers, hot dogs, and so forth. Sour and bitter foods like most veggies are totally "off limits".

Guilty as charged. I eat a lot of stuff I don't need because it tastes good. I can get away with it though, I have a cranked up metabolism :D

I only eat food I like the taste and texture of. But that's not why I eat it. I eat because I'm hungry. I don't eat things I loathe, no matter how hungry I am. (Well, I've never starved, so that could change I suppose.)

gosh, that makes me envious. when i was young i was underweight also [6'4"@150#] and i didn't eat at all healthily, which caught up with me later. when i turned 30, it was as though somebody flipped a switch and i went from high to low metabolism. since then i have had to work at staying not too overweight, forget about being 150# again.

so Avarice, let's hope this doesn't happen to you when you get older.

when i was fit, young and slim, i could get away with eating only tasty foods. but when i got into my 3rd decade and later, nature played a nasty trick and turned down the thermostat, so my metabolism went WAAYY down. i can survive now on roughly 1/3 the food i used to be able to eat, and still i battle butt bulge.
so i sorta compromise on something midway between tasty and healthy. no more spam  i used to love the spam with cheddar cheese in it. food of the gods for sure! i used to love drinking mrs. butterworth's maple syrup right out of the bottle. same with chocolate cake frosting. i would take a block of deli chocolate cream cheese, cover it with cherry pie filling, then top it all off with whipped cream. gads, that was good. barbequed KFC chicken breasts - OMG. corned beef hash with cheddar cheese and gravy on top of it. hooeey! in the army mess hall i would have the food servers put gravy on everything, and i would top that with cheese and croutons from the salad bar. "let us ignore lettuce" i used to say facetiously. let the rabbits have the carrots.
even though i was superficially healthy then, my "emissions" were quite foul. since i started eating more healthily, i no longer f@art much at all - such is one plus to healthy food. but the damage was done. high cholesterol, high blood pressure and brittle blood sugar regulation. so i will pay for my youthful eating for the rest of my life. i can't chew raw veggies due to TMJ. so i drink 'em in the form of V-8 juice, it makes for most of my daily liquid intake. i'm a fanatic for nutritional supplements/vitamins. diet/sugarfree/fatfree is my modern mantra. nothing white [sugary/starchy] will pass my lips. but every now and then, i sneak off to the pizza hut for a stuffed-crust number with sausage, pepperoni, onion and bacon. no more than once per month, i swear :)

I don't have a real clue of whats wrong with me physically (I might be getting my license switched over for this state tomorrow, so go me!), but I know for a fact that there is something seriously wrong. I know I'm dying quicker than the people at my school I used to know who'd eat a bag of chips and drink a bottle of coke and be happy for a day. I know that when I eat certain carbohydrates, I do not feel well. I'm sure it's a gluten problem, but I also want to make sure I'm right.

However, I am SUPPOSED to be cutting carbohydrates out of my diet, and possibly including gluten products, but the only thing I've done lately is eat less. Because no matter what I eat, I get sick.

But I also can't afford to eat well either. I like a lot of foods, so I don't have a problem with the taste of some foods. But when I do, I like so many varieties of foods, I turn it down. I think that if I weren't sick every day, I would be more willing to try new foods. Which is about the only thing I'm willing to try new things of. heh

Well, for me its NO GLUTEN so that limits things greatly.
Add to that the fact that I have had somebody recommend therapy to me because I do not generally get enjoyment out of eating. Its something I do to stop fainting from hunger. Very little food is actually enjoyable and eating is a chore.
Needless to say I am not exactly overweight...

I am a total sugar junkie. I usually control myself pretty well around most other foods but if I can't have something sweet every day I get anxious and can't think or concentrate. Sometimes just going to the store and looking at candy and sweets calms me. I try to avoid foods high in sat. fats or have trans fat but I have to have sugar if I can't have anything else. It seems to be getting worse, too. I've been finding it harder and harder to eat foods that are acidic or sour like fruits. And just the thought of bitter food makes me nauseous. The two food groups I like best are grains and dairy products. I like many kinds of veggs. but to really enjoy them they half to be really fresh or prepared withrice or pasta. I don't usually feel physically hungry most of the time, I can go for almost a whole day without eating but I usually don't. I wish that I could. :( My metabolism must be slower than frozen molasses. Actually that's one sweet thing I don't like. Much...

I have a fast metabolism. When you have to eat as much as me you learn at a very early age to detest food. I only enjoy my strong, black British tea and roasted chestnuts. As for the rest... I wish the Jetsons meal pills really did exist.
