So I was (badly) throwing aerial roundhouse kicks in martial arts class yesterday, and I had this hernia-like feeling, like my core muscles were pulling apart.

And..yeah...please don't laugh...I was lying on my bed violently hacking up from the remnants of a flu virus, same thing happened, and now it hurts whenever I move or sit up taller.

Should I be worried??

You might want to have that examined by a doctor or a PT. I am prone to pain in that area, due to fibromyalgia. Just by stubbing my toe, I can set it off. I recently had PT for pain like that.

Yeah, I will if it doesn't get better.

Nurofen isn't working. I'm fine if I don't move all that much, but just sitting up sharply in my seat tore the s**t out of it.

I got some cold gel for the area. I feel a lot better, still hurts when I move but it is dull rather than acute.

Might just be a pulled muscle rather than a hernia. I'd be worried if it still hurts real bad tomorrow, but it sounds like it's getting better already.

Maybe you could take something for inflammation? Was that what the Nurofen was for?

I'd see a doctor. Could be a soft tissue injury, in which case ice and rest are advised. More's needed for a hernia.

yes, when my dad got a hernia he said he could feel it separate, just like the OP said

that is what happens, it splits along the muscle grain, not across. See your doc, at least call and let him/her know the symptoms. Good luck with that.

Hernias are usually noticeable above the surface. If you have got odd protrusions then it is likely to be a hernia, if it is just a little puffy then it unlikely to be one.

I think Moog was right, just a pulled muscle. I feel a good bit better now, it's still kinda sore but not as severe as yesterday.

Had me worried, though. I swear, that was NOT normal pain.

Do you know of anything I could do for that weak zone? This thing has happened before, though not as badly.

where exactly is it? take it easy for now. Best not aggravate it. There is muscle stretching you can do. Personally i prefer the manual methods rather then using a a machine.

It's in the right side in the middle part of my stomach muscles...And it's like there's a vertical line that opens up if I do certain movements.

Have you been pregnant to term or had a baby? This is what happens to some women after having a baby and they dont know about it until they exercise. Sounds horrible really. You must have been throwing some wild roundhouses! Were you snapping your leg really hard?

Never. I'm 19 and otherwise somewhat tight and fit.

Yeah I was snapping my leg really hard.

Sounds to me like you have pulled a muscle. I do this at the gym from time to time. If it doesn't settle down by itself, you should see a GP.

Last time I did a muscle, my GO ordered an ultrasound which revealed a soft tissue injury. This healed with time and some ati-inflammatories.

I got that thing again after falling awkwardly at parkour/freerunning class. I went up into a handstand but lost my balance and fell in a kind of fetal position. And this time I hurt both sides not just the weak zone in my right side. Disembowelment, yay 8O :D I'm ok now though.

It seems to happen when doing any movement that involves curling up sharply. Could it be I'm putting strain on the connective tissue inbetween the muscle walls??
