Does anybody have any first hand experience with these drugs? Do you recommend them? How hard are they to get?

I only know what I have read...
1. The effects are temporary.
2. Excessive use can lead to sterility and being barrel shaped.

Nope, I would avoid them like the plague.

I once worked with a guy who was slightly obsessive about his interests. He got into working out and started taking steroids. His personality changed completely, from a friendly interesting guy to something so aggressive that I couldn't deal with him any more.

Anything that messes with your hormone balance to such a degree - I would avoid.

Yeah, I knew a guy with AS who got into steroids....his interests became hanging around a bunch of half naked men, wanting to help each other "pump up"

Its just that for an aspie guy who is not happy with the way his face looks, bulking up at the gym is a great way to improve his looks. I certainly don't want to end up like that wrestler who killed his family out of roid rage and then killed himself. I think there is probably a happy medium somewhere when it comes to steroids.

One thing I am concerned with is just how temporary are they. Do ALL the gains disappear after you quit taking them?

Why anyone would want to screw around with their endocrine system is beyond me......

Do it the safe and natural way. Go to the gym and pump up. Get someone to introduce you to weight lifting so you do it correctly without injuring yourself. Then go home and eat protein: eggs, milk, meat, peanut butter, protein shakes (whey or soy).

Also try swimming! Proper front crawl technique will bulk you up, especially if you are using paddles.

Steroids definitely help with muscle building. There's no denying that. They are extremely dangerous though, and your huge muscles will leave you when you get older and leave behind a lot of wrinkled hanging skin. Yuck. Look:

HGH (growth hormone) does not seem to help much actually. The jury is still out on the benefits and side effects, and factual data is hard to come by, mainly because HGH is used covertly. (Duh!) If it is helping, it does so marginally. What it can do for sure is misshapes the skull into a cave man cromagnon look. You might have seen that look on some pro wrestlers? Yes that was HGH.

...but ofcourse it is up to you. I'm looking forward to more episodes of Forensic Pathology with Dr G.

Bottom line is that if you have low testosterone for your age group, you would benefit from bringing it up to the level it should be. People who try to do that without knowing what all of their blood test levels are, will get their hormones all SNAFU'd, and have all kinds of problems. The problem is that most insurance won't pay for hormone testing. See a doctor who deals with hormone replacement therapy... Might be the best thing you ever did. More young men that we could imagine, have low T, and don't ever get diagnosed.

I am a bodybuilder, and I am on hormone replacement therapy. I'll tell you that I've been lifting since I was 14 or 15, and NEVER got where I wanted to be until I got my hormones to the proper levels for a man my age.

"Steroids" is a nasty word. It refers to testosterone cypionate (natural hormone), and various forms of artificial and animal-derived testosterone. HGH (human growth hormone) is the other main ingredient to growth & healing. Both are already in your body, but could be way low or way high. When a doctor gives these substances, it's no more "steroids abuse" than an Aspie taking 5mg of Adderall is "abusing Speed/amphetamines".

It's sure sad how society puts branded labels on things.... There are people who buy "steroids" and shoot them without having any idea what they're doing, and no idea what their levels are. One friend of mine; a competitive lifter and world-competitive surfer, died at age 29 from "steroid abuse". Please know what you're doing, and follow a doctor's orders to bring hormone levels to optimum levels... Don't just guess.

I haven't used anabolic steroids, but I did recently stop taking steroids (hormone replacement) that I took for over a year. The word 'steroid' scares me now, whether it's hormone replacement ones or not. Lots of (negative) side effects, including about 70lbs of weight gain.

That sounds like you were converting the added testosterone into estrogen, which is a common problem if the doctor doesn't do all the needed testing. You may also have needed zinc and progesterone injected, or been prescribed Arimidex pills to stop that from happening. I indeed have gained weight, but it's all lean muscle. I'm 185lbs at 6' tall, and 5.7% body fat now! This definitely isn't something that can be solved for anyone via internet. Way too complicated and involved, with way too man wildcards.

What about testosterone progenitors? They aren't steroids themselves, but act on the testicles to stimulate natural testosterone production. Also, where do I find a hormone replacement doctor?

That's awesome about getting down to 5.7%. What kind of diet do you use?

OP - So what exactly are your current free test levels?

I had it checked a few years ago and it was in the low normal range. I forget the exact number. If its important, I can go look it up.

EDIT: Ok, looked it up. The test was Total Testosterone and the value was 417. The normal reference range is 241-827 ng/dL. So it sounds like I'm in the low middle. I guess they wont give me a prescription in that range.

Andrology is fairly complex. Was the above value a morning value, or close to whenever you normally get out of bed? That would be the peak value. Other issues are how sensitive your androgen receptors are and your level of dihydrotestosterone, which is more potent. Yes, there are drugs that modulate all of the above and they are all substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for competitive sport. Another question is whether you are on any drugs at present that could lower testosterone levels.

Anabolic steroids and HGH can have adverse impact on your organs. You would do well to keep your focus on your health and not let body image issues ruin you. Sometimes you need to allow time to discover nature's provision. I enjoyed success as an endurance athlete years after bodybuilding. Triathlon training is good for the mind and the body.
