We've been talking about styling hair in another forum, and someone was asking about curling hair for old fashion styles.

I can pin curl and rag roll and do these for reenactment 'retro' styles.

I'll pull out my instructions and those interested can have a go, what first?

I wish I could, but my hands are just too clumsy. I get frustrated and impatient, I can't even use an iron for very long before my arms are tired and I hurry up to finish no matter what it looks like.

I am very envious you have to skills and know how to do it.

I have so many how to manuals, even original salon instructions from the 30's and 40's. Back when styling was still part of the hair salon experience. Can you imagine, going in and coming out with perfectly curled hair? Must have been wonderful.

Maybe you can answer one question for me. How do you use setting lotion? I have a big bottle of some I bought from a beauty supply store but no clue how to apply it. Do you pour some in a spray bottle at squirt it on?

I've never used setting lotion, for rag rolls I use rice starch (It's authentic) Literally use cooled water that I cooked rice in and just dip my hair into it.

Otherwise use I use mouse or spray in stuff.

Frustrated? You wouldn't want to have heard the language I used first time I tried to rag roll! But it's much easier now and I tend to do in in front of the TV so I can have a rest when I need.

I've tried rag curling but it just doesn't work for me. It comes out all weird.

I suppose I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not really fussed. It takes too long. I can't be fussed with doing things to my hair that take too long, unless it's for a really special occasion.

First time I rag rolled it really didn't work. Second time I got the hang of it. The trick I found is to be very careful unrolling it and not touch the curls. I did this so much at the end of the day I was able to re-roll each section so I could sleep on it again for the next day.

The rice starch was stronger and I think that helped too, plus it made my hair really shiny.

If I had long hair, I would.
