I don't know if you experience this but I've noticed that a lot of guys with Aspergers have a lot of weight around their middle. They aren't fat or overweight but they can't seem to budge the fat around their waists. Does anyone elese have this and have you been able to shift this at all?

I think the belly fat has to do with the poor dieting. Typically people with Asperger's aren't going to be contestants on America's Next Top Chef (is that a real show or did I just make that up? Sad, isn't it) which means that a lot of the food we eat ends up in the gut...because the packaged foods that are easy to cook give you belly fat. Now obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone on the spectrum, but it's just a general theory.

Men naturally store fat in their midsection. So, unless a guy is active or naturally very thin overall, his belly fat will be the last thing to go in most instances.

Never was a problem when I was younger, might become one now if I didn't work out.

Yeah. I don't think this is Aspergers related. Most of my life, I was unable to gain any weight, no matter what I ate. In my late teens, I would clock in at probably 3000-4000 calories a day, and I could hardly even put on muscle before my flying metabolism processed all the protein. Only since I hit 20 have I been able to put on any weight, and it's still easy to keep off.

i had gained alot of weight around my middle by january this year with help from my brother i started having a very good diet ie only healthy foods and as little dairy as possible mainly soya. I also worked very hard and did alot of exercise some days i was doing 12 hours exercise a day (this was due to intense workout in the job i was in and home exercise) i completely lost all the fat around my stomach to point i have nearly got a six pack. Now with a little caution it is very easy to maintain the right size and weight i lost 2 stone in 6 and a half months. another thing i forgot to put is in them 6 and half months the only alcohol i consumed was vodka and diet coke i cut out completely cider, beer and all that stuff so i lost weight faster

This is true. On the Asperger's vs overweight (midsection or otherwise) question, I don't think there's any physical connection, but it could be that since many Aspies seem to be more into hobbies and interests not involving physical activity so much, you could call that a connection. I'm lucky in that way though... One of my long-term obsessions is fitness & bodybuilding, and while it's hard for anyone to make the sacrifices to get to a goal like mine (sixpack at age 44), it's possible, Asperger's or not.

I am built this way. Perhaps something to it. It's where my fat reserves are anyways.(small potbelly) I am scrappy/wiry strong for 5'7". I am thankful to have large calves though. So there's leverage in my build.

I too have a rather high metabolism. Is a high metabolism somewhat common in an asperger's person for some reason?

I sometimes don't quite get how I can put down so much food for an avg. sized person...

i think i fit what you refer to - the rest of me is totally thin and in shape - but i have love handles. they were even there when i was a wrestler and was well under-weight.
