The longest living human was a French woman who died at age 122. However, the avarage life expectancy in the world is only 69 years old. What would be the highest possible life expectancy, assuming we stop most wars and greatly improve medecine? I've figured after 150 years even though you would stay alive your body would break apart, you would go deaf, blind, shrivel from extreme old age and become paralysed by arthritis. I've actually been thinking of this for a sci-fi story, where extremly advanced medical technology can basically make humans immortal, but there is a moratory on old age where you must be euthanised at age 150 unless you old a very important role (exemple: you were witness to an extremly important historical event, there is a war looming and you are a talented general, the government need a really good president and you got some experience).

They say the first person to live to be 150 has already been born. I wouldn't wish that on myself.

If you assume that the technology used to help people sustain a high quality life won't offset the decline in the quality of life, you'll have a lot of people that will declare that would just rather wait for death (even if they could afford the technology). Looking at them in their despicable condition might reignite the debate for euthanasia and suicide, and give momentum to the pro choice people. Another thing is to consider is how these people will behave when all their friends and family are long gone. I guess you could look at some orphaned children in this way, but I think children still have a better chance at making friends than someone that is pushing 130.

Then again, that first person to hit 150 would probably received a lot of support, to make sure they can live as long as they can. Wouldn't that be a good statistic for a country to brag about?

With the medical advancements we`re making these days i dare to say, in 100 year you`ll have your mid-life crisis around the age of 150!

Ofcourse they will find something that slows down the aging progress...

It's believed by some that by removing aging genes and repairing telomeres, humans could live for centuries. It makes me wonder why those genes were there in the first place - how do we know that they aren't the same genes that prevent us from, say, liquifying in our sleep?

Even if it's possible, I imagine families would become extremely complicated, as many generations could coexist and would still look about the same age...

I think they weren`t removed to fight overpopulation.

Actually i`m pretty sure :P

This is very interesting I wish I knew more about it but these days I'm kind of glad that life's short.. There are evolutionary reasons for dying obv, but it is speculated that theoretically it is possible to live *for ever*. There are many studies done on life extension, for instance with resveratrol and CRON. I remember having read on some actual drugs that prevent ageing but they won't be disclosed (another conspiracy). Maybe we could even transport our mind into a robotic body. I think in the near future artificial organs will be very common if we don't die out b/c of overpopulation. We could even robotize our brain. Damn this is so amazing if only was funded properly. And I can see all these religious nutheads blowing against wind.

I think the solution to safe us from ourself if we can go immortal, is to make nearly all people infertile.

Except a small group of people with the purpose to reproduce our species, I don`t think we`ll ever find a cure to beheading or brain shot out and if we don`t replace those victims we`ll still SLOWLY die out.

Another solution is to store reproduce humans in a lab when we`re running low on humans.

i think the technology would not be that far off if there was funding enough to research and also to implement medical treatments. Stem cells have huge huge promise. I don't think it is unreasonable to presume we will be able to grow body parts within 50 years (a lot less if there is an increase in funding)

What i'm wondering is if there will be a kind of brick wall that people cannot get older than? maybe something to do with the brain. are all other organs replaceable without changing who you are?
