Ok, So, I have GERD. I'd been taking PPIs for years like Prilosec, Aciphex, and Prevacid and now I'm on Protonix. The problem is I started having shortness of breath over a year ago, which the G Dr says is unrelated, but I insist that it is, now that I've been noticing an increase in chest pain. I went to the ER about the chest pain, because I simply couldn't stand the thought of not knowing what it was and my family doctor being clueless. Anyways, they all say my EKG, etc are all healthy, but because of my history of taking PPIs, it's probably my stomach. The family doctor finally checked me out and pushed on areas of my abdomen and although I wasn't in any pain right then, he asked if if anything hurt. No pain, but there was a gasp for air when he pushed down on my stomach and I mean a gasp as in my lung wanted me to breath. No pain, but that's it. My stomach, he said. Upper GI with the tube done. I have moderate esophogitis. So I'm given protonix twice a day instead of once. This was two weeks ago. I have to see him again on the 5th.

So a couple months ago, I drastically lowered my mnt dew intake as that seems to be the likely cause as I was a serious addict to it. Like 4-5 bottles a day. But instead I start drinking water. We get spring water here, so it's clean. My mouth, since that time has gotten drier slowly, but for the last couple days I've been getting more heartburn, which the med kept in check for the most part. I hardly complained about heartburn as long as I was on my medicine before this. And on top of the extra heartburn I now have had a sore throat for the last couple days. It seems nothing I do fixes the problem.

Now should I call my Gastro doctor or should I wait till my appointment 2 and a half weeks away? I'm normally rather insistant on keeping till my appointments unless I think I seriously have to see them right away.

It sounds like you have a problem. It wouldn't hurt to call the doctors office soon, and see if they might be able to help.

Some things that you can do on you own are experiment with your diet. As you mention you removed Mountain Dew from what you drink. I would imagine that's a good start. You might also try eating gluten/wheat free for a few weeks. I didn't have symptoms similar to yours, but had gut issues and noticed they improved greatly after avoiding wheat. Diary can be another common gut trouble maker.

If concerned about heart disease, as you visited the ER with them giving an EKG, you might look into a heart CT scan. You can arrange one on your own, or talk to your doctor about having one. A heart CT scan can detect if there is plaque in an artery. I might be wrong about this, but I don't believe an EKG is capable of doing that.

Here is an article about heart scans and plaque growth. Good luck, hope you find an answer on what is going wrong, with the shortness of breath, and gerd like symptoms soon!
