Does anyone have any ideas on how to find an autism friendly doctor for adults? I have been putting off going to a doctor for too many years and all I can find are pediatricians.

I'm interested in the exact same thing except for doctors in the Durham Region of Ontario, Canada.

I don't really know, but isn't there groups that support people with autism around you? I'd look for a recommendation from them.

1. Ask your GP for a referral.

2. No GP? Check the local phone book under government listings for Mental Health Dept. #s. Then contact the local gov mental health dept. and ask for referrals.

3. Alternate choice: Contact the local hospitals and ask for a referral to a psych doc who deals with adult Autism/Asperger's disorders.

4. Another alternative choice: Contact nearest medical college or university to ask for a referral to a psych doc who treats adult Autism/Asperger's disorders.

The best path is #1, but your post seems to indicate that you don't have a GP. Without the help of a GP, the next best choice is #2, although the others are okay, too.

Good luck! :D

I should have been more specific. I am looking for a general practitioner. I have a psychiatrist but she had no suggestions for a GP. I contacted the autism society of my state and the only resources they had were for pediatricians. Since I'm 27 that won't work.
