Has anyone seen a place where I could get some small leg weights that are suitable for running? Basically, you wrap these things around your ankles or wrists and then go for a jog; gives you a great workout. I've used them before in Oz for martial arts training, but haven't seen them here...

In America you mean? I'm fairly sure they sell them at Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-10 ... s/14894523

Why would you want those? Looks silly. More importantly, it's completely ineffective for cardiovascular training (you can modulate the intensity without any additional weight) as well as for strength training (not enough weight for that). The biggest effect is probably more stress on your joints and tendons by carrying additional weight in unnatural places.

I was going to say something similar, they are only supposed to be used for certain exercises, not for jogging

If you want to add weight to yourself for joggin a weight vest is supposed to be a safe way to do that.

Ankle weights are too light to cause harm to joints and they don't effect the same joints same direction that are prone to overload during running - at least on reasonable disdance (I have no idea what might happen to human body on marathon). Military winter boots weigh nearly as much. If a person likes to train with additional weight, why not. Same goes for example running few times up stairs versus running longer distances on low land. It might not be perfect for every athletic goal, but if the goal is general I-feel-good-about-myself-if-I-can-do-this exercise then I can see no harm it could do. There is too much controversial advice out there what is right and wrong to do, but too many people don't follow the most important rule - listen to your body, if it hurts and gets more and more hurting, then it probably is harmful. I'd say: try everything and keep doing what feels good.

excerpt- Jogging with ankle weights can strain muscles in your legs and your ankle joints
