What does it mean when someone says "a hard life really shows in the eyes"? In what ways does having a hard life impact the human iris?

i think what shows is lines in the skin around the eyes. also, i've seen abused kids with a "dead" expression in their eyes, just like no one was home inside their heads.

It probably means you can tell the person's had a hard life just by looking at his face and can very well mean his eyes as well. For example, you usually see the difference between a toddler's eyes who is exploring their world with new, innocent, vulnerable fascination. Their eyes are usually round and bright in wonderment and if you looked into a person's eyes who was 85 years old you might see more wisdom, like they know a lot of things and have experienced a lot in life...usually calm and understanding. Sometimes a hard life could mean that there is no sparkle in their eyes...they might have lines and bags around their eyes. Their eyes might look tired.

i've always wondered what is meant by this. i think i have seen it myself but i don't know what specifically it is and if there is any scientific explanation

is the phrase perhaps semi metaphorical or the eyes symbolic?

THIS is visual evidence of a hard life. at the time dorothea lange snapped this photo, this poor lady had just sold the tires off her car to pay for her kids' food.

Your disposition and manner are shaped by your life experiences.

It shows in your eyes, how you view things.
