So, I got a prescription for anxiety and depression, that helped a little bit.

But now I've started supplementing with Magnesium and the difference is very, very clear.

I've read that it functions to block NMDA channels from becoming overly excited.

Has anyone else had success using Magnesium? And what does the science say about Magnesium, NMDA channels, and autism?

I also supplement with magnesium for it's various health benefits. Just be careful not to over dose on it. And yes, too much magnesium, or any other supplement, can harm you. I forget what the recommended upper limit for magnesium is, so you will have to look it up yourself,--sorry.

I have been adding different supplements gradually over the years. A few were useless, or caused bad reactions, so I dropped them. I have noticed benefits from others. I take a combo pill of glucosamin/chondroitin/MSM/Hyluronic acid/plus some other stuff in it, for my bad knees and bad back, and it does help. When I run out of it, I really notice the difference after a few days. It does irritate my stomach a little, so I take it with meals. I used to take prescription strength Ibuprofin for my painful joints, but found that enteric coated aspirin was just as helpful, and doesn't upset my tummy. I take B complex for various health benefits, including mood help. Although it doesn't make me feel great, I do think it helps me feel less depressed. I recently started taking cinnamin caps. I noticed a slight improvement in body feeling after I started taking it. The change was very minor, but I did notice it, so I will continue taking it. I switched from regular C vits recently, to Ester C. Regular C irritates my stomach, but I don't have the same problem with Ester C, so I will stick with that. I also take Liverite Liveraid, and milk thistle caps for my liver. I don't drink or do drugs, but we are exposed to so many other toxins, so I decided to give my liver some help in dealing with them. I also take large doses of vit D, turmeric caps, and flax seed oil caps. The flax seed oil caps are a substitution for fish oil caps. I tried fish oil caps years ago, and it irritated my intestines, but I don't have the same problem with the flax seed oil, and it does the same things as fish oil.

I have always had a too acid stomach, IBS, and a kink in my bowel, so some things bother my system. When that happens I have to drop them, and eventually find substitutes. I tried calcium pills but that really bothered my intestines, so I dropped it. I now eat more cheese to supplement my calcium. I am not a big milk drinker, don't care for yogurt, and can't stand leafy green veggies, many of which are high in calcium. The only high calcium foods I like and can handle are cheese and meats. I think some nuts and seeds are high in calcium too, and I eat those, too.

I never buy leafy green veggies. I really, really don't like them. The closest I ever come to them, is occasionally buying ice berg lettuce, and I'm not really fond of that, either. There are non leafy vegs I will eat, though--cauliflower, sweet peppers, cubanella peppers, carrots, sweet taters, and some others, but I am not a veggie person. I will occasionally eat beans, which I don't like, if I have BBQ sauce to put on them. That's the only way I can get them down. Funny thing about me and beans. My mouth and intestines hate them, but my stomach likes them. Tummy always seems to feel good after a bean meal, even though Mouth hated eating it. As for why I would eat something I don't like. Canned beans are cheap, easy to make, easy to keep handy on the pantry shelf for emergencies, and are supposed to be good for you. At least with BBQ sauce I can make myself eat them occasionally.

I've had breads made with some bean flower in them, and that was okay.

Because it's hard to swallow all those supplement pills, I've tried some of them in drink form, but they are expensive that way, and none of them tasted good. Very few of them come in chewable forms. Vit C is one that does, but in that version it upsets my stomach, so I have to stick with the ester C horse pills.

I tried HTP for a while a few years ago, and it didn't do a thing for me. I also tried Ginko Biloba once. Big mistake. It made my head feel unpleasantly weird, so I ended up throwing away most of a big bottle of it. I was using a horse chestnut extract pill for my veins and circulation, but then the company added a new ingredient, that is often used with it in europe, called Diosmin, or Diosamin. I had a really bad reaction to the new improved formula, and there are no other brands of horse chestnut extract pills available at Walmart, so I am out of luck on that one, now. Because of health issues, it is hard for me to go out, so I make rare trips to Walmart for large grocery orders, and more frequent trips to a good local mini mart. That limits me to what ever Walmart has. I did try a health food store in the area once, but because of my bad knees and the cramped aisles, I had trouble standing and shopping in that store, so I didn't go back. I use the electric carts at Walmart, and my local mini mart has shopping carts I can hold onto, so that's one of the reasons I like the place. There is another mini mart in my town that is not as good, and also doesn't have shopping carts, so I rarely go there.

Anyway, do your research and try ones you think will help you.

Oh, well, good news for you about drink form, it's actually significantly cheaper now ordering online.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/L-Theanine-Bulk ... 6fc8d6e79a There's other sellers like that, but they sell bulk supplements as powder, just individual ingredients, you mix them up yourself and add whatever flavors you want, and tada. And it's cheaper than buying pills, too.

I tried magnesium once only for a couple days cuz my dad got some, it was awesome. Unfortunately, you need specific types of magnesium, as some aren't absorbable by the body well. Like magnesium oxide isn't, I know that. I'm thinking of buying some magnesium chloride, as it's fairly cheap to buy science grade.
