Does anypony else take this? I was at the psychiatrists the other day and was given a prescription for it to help with sleep issues. I'm only asking because I know very little about it, and supposedly there's a 50% success rate. Does it work for you if you take it? Is it worth trying at least? Thanks in advance.

I did in the past; it actually did wonders for me.

It gave me technicolor dreams and they were not good dreams either, but for some people it really works.I could sleep on it but the dreams were just too vivid.

I didn't know they prescribed it. I purchased mine at the store, a bottle of 100 pills for about 5 bucks. I used to take 3 mg, then 5mg because 3mg was not guaranteed to help me most of the time, but 5 almost always did the trick. I just took it right before getting in bed. I no longer take it because I found something that works better for me that I can also buy at the store or online. Compared to most prescription sleeping pill side effects, melatonin is great. You may experience a little drowsiness waking up, but it's nowhere near as bad as taking ambien, clonidine, ect... Melatonin won't knock you out when you take it either, it just makes a part of your mind think hmm maybe it's time to sleep, but it's completely up to you if you go to sleep or not, it shouldn't really make you drowsy, or give you a heavy, distorted feeling like most sleeping pills do. It's safer too.

I have read that people need to cycle off of melatonin every once in awhile in order to not gain a dependency on the pills, but the exact times we should escapes me. Perhaps that is something you might be interested in researching.

I took it and became floridly suicidal.

Apparently you're not meant to take it on my medication combo. You'd think my psychiatrist would have known that.

Time release melatonin tablets have worked well for me. I now sleep well most nights. I recall seeing this article recently also about melatonin and sleep. It might be helpful to stay away from electronics in the evening.

"Using laptops and tablets in the evening may disrupt sleep by suppressing melatonin secretion"

Tried it, don't think it did much for me but it could have been something else interfering with the process so im going to retry it once i clear my body of the thing that possibly interferes with it right now. I like the thought of more vivid dreams!

I've taken it before. It's sold OTC here. At Wal Mart I can get a big bottle for about $7. It works ok to help you fall asleep when you are having mild insomnia. Unlike sleeping pills and antihistamines, it doesn't make you noticably sleepy, or it didn't for me. I took it and laid down and read and after about 30 minutes I'd put my book down and turn off the light and I was able to fall asleep somewhat easier than without it.

They sell it in 3mg and 5mg dose here and the lower dose seems to work better, oddly enough. Many people find that a 3mg will help them sleep while a 5mg will make them doze and have wierd dreams. That's not the case for everyone though, so you'll have to try it yourself to see what works for you.

I tried them once. I didn't like them. I woke up drowsy, and stayed that way for most of the day. Everybody's different though...I'd try them if I were you. I'd just recommend taking them on a night where you don't have anything too important to do the next morning...

An over-the-counter sleeping medication that does work well for me is Diphenhydramine. It's an antihistamine that's marketed under names like Nytol, Unisom etc....
