I didn't know they prescribed it. I purchased mine at the store, a bottle of 100 pills for about 5 bucks. I used to take 3 mg, then 5mg because 3mg was not guaranteed to help me most of the time, but 5 almost always did the trick. I just took it right before getting in bed. I no longer take it because I found something that works better for me that I can also buy at the store or online. Compared to most prescription sleeping pill side effects, melatonin is great. You may experience a little drowsiness waking up, but it's nowhere near as bad as taking ambien, clonidine, ect... Melatonin won't knock you out when you take it either, it just makes a part of your mind think hmm maybe it's time to sleep, but it's completely up to you if you go to sleep or not, it shouldn't really make you drowsy, or give you a heavy, distorted feeling like most sleeping pills do. It's safer too.
I have read that people need to cycle off of melatonin every once in awhile in order to not gain a dependency on the pills, but the exact times we should escapes me. Perhaps that is something you might be interested in researching.
