I am a sports fan, in fact, I've been one for as long as I can remember. There's lot of reasons why I love them, but here's mine:

1. It helps me get away from my worries.
2. Just thinking about gets me excited in a good way.
3. It can give people a place in history.
4. It inspires in many ways, to myself and everyone.

What do you say?

It's a lot of fun to play and watch as well. Plus it's a great way to meet other people, since sports is such a universal topic anywhere you go. There are alot of sports that I watch, but the biggest for me is hockey.

To study competition and the competitive mindset. Why do people compete? Why do they want to win? Why do people identify with specific teams? I don't think the idea of competing with someone would have ever occurred to me if I had been left alone.

The money spent on sports is staggering. During the "economic crisis" the amount of money spent on something economically unnecessary has increased. I would have expected money spent on sports to take a hit during a crisis, but so far it has even stayed the same. The only interruptions to the money machine have been when absolute greed has shut down sports like the NBA. Although the media has talked about the "economic crisis" for years, I don't see any actual signs of it. If a true crisis existed, I would expect sports to be suffering severe cutbacks. Bowl games and March madness would be canceled or cut back severely. Pro sports would be spending less on salaries, and the general atmosphere would be one of trying to survive. Instead, sports spending is increasing.

In 1995 I suddenly and without warning went from someone who was not interested in sports to an outright hockey fanatic. There are a number of reasons why I love sports, especially Junior Hockey. I can relate to it playing myself, I can respect how hard these games are at that level, I can watch players go from boys to men and even some develop into NHL superstars (we have one kid locally who is just such a player) and it's a safe place to be. Hockey fan are generally very warm, respectful and polite and that was a welcome change to the hostile, exclusionary and hateful environments I was used to. Hockey players are also great role models and having met some are the nicest people you will ever meet.

In some ways it's exciting to know the game you are watching will be recorded in the history books and when you look at that attendance number (one of my special interests) it's kinda cool to think that number would be one lower if not for me. It's a great way to spend a Friday and Saturday night where nobody will look down on you for being alone and I can generally feel comfortable even in large crowds. Watching your team overcome the odds and win in overtime is nothing short of a magical feeling and it's hard to understand unless you have been there through thick and thin.

Plus it doesn't hurt to have a hobby that is the #1 hobby for men either. I can at least appear normal walking around town in my hockey jerseys!

It's a good way for me to get some of my energy out when I feel hyper. And, it's fun. :)

@GiantHockeyFan: Me too. I also have some baseball and football jerseys, in addition to hockey.

I grew up a sports fan. No one else in my family enjoys sports quite too the same level but for me it is a great distraction. I love reading about the history of sports and keeping track of statistics. I have books that I have filled with statistics. I have jerseys for all my favorite teams and go to games as often as possible.

Of course my favorite is hockey although I will watch just about any sport. Hockey verges into being an obsession for me as I watch games daily. I used to play all the time. I collect a lot of memorabilia. My office and home are filled with autographed pictures of players. Even today I am leaving work early so my family can get our picture taken with the Stanley Cup.

For me, hockey was just something that caught my attention as a kid (during the 1999 playoffs), and it kind of grew from there into an obsession(it helped that when I was first getting into the sport, the Leafs were actually a decent team that made the playoffs every year). Without any friends to spend my time with after school, I gradually spent more and more of my time getting into the sport and following it. It was (and still is) something that can fill my nights with something that I enjoy. It's nice that, no matter how stressful the day may have been, I can turn on a game of hockey, and forget about all of it and just relax.

It's also been key to improving my ability to interact with others around me in recent years. Given the popularity of hockey around here, it's something that gives me common ground with a lot of people - a great conversation piece.

I love sports (especially hockey) because they can get you so fired up and let you show emotion. They're fun to play. I've been a Los Angeles Kings fan for so long now and to finally see them win the cup, it brought out all those painful years into something truly amazing. Watching a favourite team lift a cup can really make you feel a part of it with them and there's nothing quite like it. Every Kings game gets me excited before I watch it and I love that feeling. Banter with other fans is great too. Even my best friend who doesn't talk about sports can get caught up in them. There's something for everyone.

I also love putting on my sports gear; it gives me that feeling that I am part of that team. It's a feeling of pride for me.

I've a generic Dallas Stars jersey, mostly because the players changed teams so often. Steve Ott one of my favorite players was traded to Buffalo. :?

On a related note; most of the jerseys I own have no name on them, this is because a friend told me that by leaving them, the backs, blank, I am giving the impression that I am representing the whole team, as opposed to just one player.

That's exactly how I get. I always wear my Kings jersey when I watch them on tv. Also love to wear my Australia football (soccer) shirt, Manchester United shirt and Chicago Bulls jersey/shorts. Even tend to put them on when playing on video games as them 8) That tends to really make me feel a part of it lol
