For Christmas this year I got a White Christmas. However, instead of snow on the ground; it took the form of Oral Thrush. For those that don't know Oral Thrush happens when a common Yeast Candida runs out of control in the mouth. It's usually characterized by a slimy white coating on the tongue and other surfaces in the mouth. I'm type-2 Diabetic which is also a risk factor for Oral Thrush.

My case seemed to start after having a fever for several days and developing several mouth blisters around Christmas. A few days later my mouth was coated in goo. Nearly everything in my mouth was swollen and, I was having pain swallowing. I tried to treat it for a few days with regular Listerine Mouthwash. Which had limited success. I went to the emergency room because I was still developing mouth blisters. One had burst under my tongue. It looked particularly nasty and, I knew things where getting out of control.

At the emergency room they determined that I still had a fever. It was 101. Which I hadn't noticed because I thought my fever had broken already. Fortunately the test for the Flu came back negative. The nurse gave me some Tylenol. It knocked out the fever. I was raise by a Naturopathy nut so I tend not to think of using stuff like Tylenol or other drugs if I don't have to. Although I'm not entirely opposed to using them if the benefit is immediately clear. Luckily in this case Tylenol did the trick. I'm not running a fever and, the mouth blisters have stopped.

They tested my Blood Sugar at 139 which I felt was too high because I had just recently eaten some plain greek yogurt and, had not eaten anything for 2 days prior.

I was prescribe Nystatin an anti-fungal mouthwash. Which seems to be working OK. I have questions about the Nystatin to the best benefit. So any tips would be helpful. I've been directed to "swish'n spit" 1 teaspoon of Nystatin after meals and once before bed. Which I assume means they want me to take it 3 times a day +before bed. However my apatite is terrible right now so I'm lucky to be forcing myself to eat once a day or not at all. Also chewing is limited so I've been sticking with stuff that I can swallow easily. Fortunately I haven't had much pain swallowing since the first 2 days but, my swallow is weak so I generally have to wash stuff down with water. So instead I've taken to using Nystatin at regular intervals when someone would normally eat. Also my sleep pattern has been fairly irregular so I try and aim for using the wash when I know I'm going to be tired enough to be down for awhile.

One of the biggest questions I have about he Nystatin is if I should rinse after the wash. I assume no because you want a coating of the the Anti-fungal in your mouth working against that Evil Candida. At any rate I've taken to rinsing my mouth out with Listerine on odd hours when I'm not taking the Nystatin. I feel I have to do this because if I let the slimy goo build up too much in my mouth it rolls down my throat and nose making it hard to breath. Also brushing is out of the question now because even the lightest brushing scrapes my gums and other parts of my mouth.

For food I started with Plain Greek Yogurt. It's been suggested that the "good" bacteria in Probiotic yogurt will counter act Candida. Since I'm sticking with soft easy to swallow foods I decided to try some cottage cheese. It tasted good but, I had to do alot of washing down of the small bits with water. Then I decide to try some Ricotta cheese. I mixed in a little crushed garlic (for anti fungal) and a small amount of Tomato soup. It was outstanding and, writing about it is making me hungry again. So any ideas on things I can eat that will help with my problems would be much appreciated.

For those that read this ramble about my battle with Oral Thrush thank you. If you have any ideas how I can NUKE this Evil fungus Candida please feel free to ramble yourself.

TLDR: I have Oral Thrush. Oral Thrush sucks. Please post helpful tips.

This may be alarmist and I'm sorry about that, but you should maybe get an HIV test. Thrush is a common childhood illness or something that you may get later if your immune system is compromised. It's also a common illness associated with HIV. It's worth looking into, and again,, I apologize that my delivery hasn't been very empathetic.

Get some plain yogurt, not sweetened, not flavored. Eat it. Eat a small carton two or three times a day. It tastes horrible but eat it slowly, as in put it in your mouth and let it sit there to get all over where the thrush is. I used to use plain yogurt on my kids mouths when they got it as a baby. Coating the inside of the mouth with it works really well and it clears up in a few days, in my experience. You don't want sugar in your mouth because it will feed the yeast. Just regular old store brand, plain yogurt is what you want. Dont' worry about getting special biotic stuff, just regular yogurt. Always worked on my kids.

I don't know if you are male or female, but it also works on vaginal yeast infections.

PS, don't rinse after the Nystatin.

I may be weird but, I love plain yogurt. As a kid I would get fruit on the bottom yogurt and not mix it up. Eat all the plain to save the fruit for last. the only difference here is there is no fruit at the end (which is fine by me).

I'm prone to lung infections and without fail, every time I take anti-biotics I get oral thrush. It sucks. My pharmacist gave me genitian violet, which is an antiseptic that costs only a few dollars. It turns your mouth dark purple when you use it but it's a really inexpensive way to cure oral thrush.

Do you use albuterol inhalers? You can get oral thrush if you don't rinse and spit consistently.
