Just got back the results from a hormonal panel. I was very interested to see if my testosterone was high, in line with Simon-Baron Cohen theories. (Note: I'm not saying that his theory says an adult with AS would have high testosterone, just thought it was a possible correlation) Also have read that low rising (a.m.) cortisol was believed to be common in AS.
Both testosterone and cortisol were normal in me. However my progesterone was low; normal range is 75-270, and mine is 43 (my doctor said it is healthier for the level to be to the higher end of the range)

I am wondering if anyone else has had hormonal testing done, and what were the results?

note: I am female and premenopausal, my doctor was not expecting hormonal issues for someone in there 20's, though they do fit in with my symptoms. Only had this test done after having tested everything else.

not sure if I should have posted this in the Women's Discussion feel free to move it.

Did he say what symptoms or side effects that would create? Also did insurance cover it? I was thinking of getting my hormones tested but heard it was expensive. Kate

Insurance will often cover hormonal testing. It cost about $200.

Quoting the labs: "Low progesterone may contribute to estrogen dominance symptom (e.g. mood swings, breast tenderness, water retention and weight gain)"

My symptoms are extremely erratic and light periods (I often skip 2-3 months and they last max 2 days). I also didn't begin menses until I was 17.
Mood swings, I'm not a very emotionally expressive person so only people close to me have notice this. The most disturbing symptom to me is really errational thinking, I will do one thing not as perfectly as I want, and my mind will go into this tailspin off thinking I'm incompetent and shouldn't be in the profession I'm in etc. etc. I know It's just my mind, and I don't really believe these things, but I cannot shut it off. It is as if I have no control over my mind. Did I mention crying all the time? And I rarely ever cried, my mom said not even as a baby. Crying to me is pointless, I don't get the emotional relief from it.

My weight is in the normal range, however I am very active and eat I healthy diet. Even when I went on a several month hiking trip and was hiking every day and not eating very much my weight didn't drop.
I don't have the breast tenderness or water retention, I've never experienced those on my period, or for that matter cramps.

I apologize if this has offended anyone. I realize I probably should has posted this thread in the women's section.
Even on Wrong Planet I manage to make a social faux pas.

I've had hormonal testing done because I have endocrine problems (adrenal insufficiency). All I remember was I had slightly high testosterone (I'm female), and waaay high progesterone. Like hundreds way higher than it should be.

^ Wow, interesting. Almost the opposite of me. What were your symptoms? Was your estrogen really low?

Sorry, I can't remember my estrogen. I just remember the other two popping out at me. The symptoms of adrenal insufficiency I had? They were:

-chronic fatigue/lethargy (I was bed-ridden at the end there, only got up to use the bathroom and get food)
-nausea
-weight loss (about 60 lbs)
-hair loss (not completely, but some thinning)
-low blood pressure/postural hypotension
-syncope

There are some others, those are just the ones I experienced.

Sorry for not clarifying- I meant the symptoms particularly of high progesterone. But I suppose they would be tied in with adrenal fatigue symptoms, it would be hard to tell what cause from effect. I'll just have to do some research...

Oh, didn't get that  Like you said, I wouldn't be able to distinguish the symptoms from each condition. And the progesterone could have been a result of the adrenal insufficiency. I also have a brain problem (chiari malformation), so there's just a slight chance that could have played a part somehow too.

I had done about half a year ago. It was funny, because results were normal... but if I was a man, they still would be normal. If I covered the name and asked male or female?, an answer would be I don't know
When I was younger, I had high testosterone level, almost flat chest and my voice become deeper and deeper (well, it still does it).

Now I should check my GF and IGF-1 level, because I don't look good.

My estrogen is high, my blood pressure is low and my thyroid is having a party.

So basically I have trouble growing a beard, have a gender neutral voice, am always tired and am unable to gain weight (I am actually under weight). I am about 50/50 loving and hating it.

How can males produce that much estrogen? Where is it coming from??

Well my estrogen is at a high level in relation to my testosterone, it could just be that my testosterone is low and my estrogen is normal, I'm not sure how it works.

I'm presuming from this that you are female. "Results were normal" but don't they base 'normal' on what is normal for your gender?

What is GF and IGF-1 levels?

Yes, I'm female.
But my estrogenes level is low enough and testosterone's high enough to make me hormonal neutral. When I was teen, I had high testosterone, I was on pills and now I have hourglass body shape.

IGF-1 means Insulin-like Growing Factor.
GH means Growing Hormone.
I have most of Acromegaly traits. I always was tall and big-boned etc, so I didn't care... but when my teeth changed, I decided to check GH and IGF-1.

My testosterone was within normal range, but nothing else was tested. I want to go back to find out the ratios.

Did you test your oxytocin levels?

That's the main hormone suspected for autism.
