I have decided to give up sugar! Not just candy and cookies, but also half-healthy foods that are full of sugar, like, yogurt, granola, and apple cinnamon oatmeal. It's very hard controlling what I eat, and I don't know if I'll make it...but it'll be easier if my fellow WP members cheer me on! And I'll this is not just a thread for u guys to motivate me, it's also where I'll confess if I do eat sugar. It would be humiliating to post online that I gave in, so every time I eat sugar, I have to humiliate myself. Now that's going 2 motivate me.

hiya Kiki :) welcome to the cool club 8) be aware that there is "sugar" also hiding in any refined carb- white rice, potatoes of any kind, couscous, oats and barley, you name it. so it is a matter of 1]avoiding anything with actual white or brown sugar in them [IOW cookies/cakes/pies et al, 2]avoiding anything white [white rice, white bread, white potatoes, couscous, barley, chips et al], 3] limiting any other carb, especially corn. things cooked in virgin coconut oil [medium chain triglyceride] will get you energy in that coconut oil acts "carby" in the body in a manner that your brain can use similar to a carb. and don't be afraid of fat, there are good fats [such as the aforementioned coconut oil]. since I have done these things my health has noticeably improved. good luck to you! :)

Low carb, high-protein diets are the way to go!

Eat frequent small portions and make sure to keep yourself as hydrated as possible.

There you go. The perfect diet.

So tomorrow, I can't have peanut butter on my toast for breakfast because it has a little bit of added sugar, but I need protein. I'm promising myself that I'll eat toast with turkey, which is a little bit weird because turkey isn't normally a breakfast food--but that's because we Americans are eating Pop Tarts and granola bars for breakfast instead! And peanut butter toast is one of the healthier things Americans eat for breakfast, but turkey is even better for you than peanut butter--it's practically 100% protein! So I'm going to tell myself that it's okay to eat things that don't sound right for the time of day if it's healthier.

I hope the toast is of whole wheat, not white bread. better yet is old-fashioned oats.

Kiki, I've been sugar-free now for going on two years, as part of a diet, and I love it. The only concessions I make is local, raw honey, and a can of ginger ale every day. The honey is good for allergies, and is actually a fairly complex carbohydrate. The ginger ale is good for the digestive tract.

As far as what Auntblabby says about carbs being sugar, the good carbs are complex whereas sweet sugars are not. The difference is that simple sugars are along the lines of C6H12O6, while so-called complex carbs are chains of at least five thousand of these simpler molecules. The difference is that it takes the body a while to break down complex carbs into simple sugars, thereby eliminating a lot of the problems with simple sugars. I'm on a fairly low carb diet myself, but we all need some carbs. I just make sure that most of mine are of the complex variety.

Yes, I eat whole-wheat bread. I hate plain oatmeal--I'm not going 2 b that extreme. But I only have 2 slices of turkey in the fridge. If I ration out the turkey like that, I might be starving by lunchtime and overeat, unless maybe I add an apple? Apples are filling and healthy.

why not take the oatmeal and leaven it with the turkey [and various spices] and maybe add some feta cheese to it?, make a meal out of it? or cook the oatmeal with the apples?

Awesome! Do you like baking? We bake with nut flours and dates or honey as sweeteners. I'm an avid label reader. I avoid all sugars and a whole long list of c-r-a-p! Good luck :)

My first instinct was, "I don't cook, I'm lazy, especially in the morning," but then I realized that I can't be lazy. I'll step outside my comfort zone a little. Cooking in the morning will just prove that I'm not as lazy as I think. I could turn this whole no-sugar diet into an opportunity to be a junior chef!

Adding a spoonful of peanut butter to your oatmeal and/or using milk instead of water will make it taste a lot less plain, and you can still cook it in the microwave. Plus, you can add apple sauce, apple chunks, raisins, etc.
Apple sauce makes a great sweetener for things like that. (Make sure you buy the unsweetened kind, though) Try mixing apple sauce with plain yogurt, too! It tastes better than the heavily sweetened commercial yogurt in my opinion.

I don't know, I gave in and felt lazy, so I didn't cook. But here's what I've eaten by noon:
7:30 A.M.: 2 whole grain rice cakes with turkey (130 calories)
9:30 A.M.: Banana (120 calories)
10:30 A.M.: Nuts and carrots (235 calories)
11:30 A.M: Minestrone soup and cheese sandwich on whole wheat (500 calories)
Total: 985 calories

So far, so good. About half my calorie allowance in half a day! Perfect! My meals are spread out evenly. I'm taking the "small portions frequently" thing to an extreme, nibbling every hour or so. Any suggestions on how I could eat even healthier?

^^^ Don't forget to include what you drink. Since you cut out sugar I assume you don't drink sugered sodas, but there are also quite a bit of carbohydrates and calories in fruit juice or milk.

I find there is often sugar in products you don't associate it with. On a bottle of ketchup I have here it says the first ingredient is glucose-fructose syrup, so there's more sugar in it than tomatoes.
I'm not avoiding sugar, but I do think it is often overused.

Okay, so I stuck to the plan up until lunchtime. I realized the soup I ate had white noodles, and then I had two mini muffins, and a sandwich on white bread  . Sometimes when I try to watch what I eat, I only stick to it in the morning...it's just that my self-control wears off as the day goes on. I know what the problem was...I was on a hike, my dad brought snacks, and all he brought were snacks I can't eat. But I was so hungry...I couldn't wait until I got home, so I gave in and had mini muffins. Otherwise, I would have just gotten back on track even though I had the soup, but I guess when I cheated more than once, I got sucked in and kept eating like that for the rest of the day. Next time I go on a hike, I'll bring my own snacks. And I can't just tell myself to wait out my hunger, since I'm hypoglycemic.

I packed non-perishable healthy snacks (whole-grain rice cakes, almonds) in a purse for whenever I have to leave the house. Because if I get hungry and I don't have food with me, healthy snacks can be hard to find...welcome to America! I mean, if you go to the mall, all they have to snack on are Auntie Anne's pretzels. I heard a rumor that those things have 800 calories! And even if someone else brings snacks, like today, chances are they'll be bringing something I can't eat--unless they're health nuts. What do u guys think of the "toting healthy snacks everywhere I go" approach?
