I started taking phentermine a few days ago and I was seeking advice on how to maximize its benefits. It's cut my apatite drastically and after a few days of eating smaller meals I feel stuffed if I try to eat one of my former meals. It's given me slightly more energy. So anyway is there any particular diet or exercise I should take while on phentermine?

So far I've just been walking for a couple of hours a day and doing a few push ups. Is there a way to lose only fat on not the modest amount of muscle I have? I've been eating about 700 calories a day in two small meals. Is that enough? Are any particular food needed? Is it okay to fast for one day a week? For a little while I was losing 2 KG a day but now that seems to have paused. Is rapid weight loss to start with just some sort of initial reaction before the real journey begins?

If I manage to lose a significant amount of weight in the end, is there a way to keep it off? I thought once I reach an acceptable weight I could just eat whatever my BMR is at the time and that would prevent regaining but perhaps after months of not eating much I'll start regaining rapidly even while not eating more than my current BMR. Any thoughts?

have you first consulted with a bariatric physician [specializing in weight issues]?

No, I just got it from my GP. He gave me little advice. He just said it was medical speed, would reduce my apatite and give me more energy. He did say that when he saw me next fortnight he'd refer me to some sort of weight loss place.

Also wondering if it just suppresses apatite and increases energy or if it actually speeds up the metabolism.

(clicky)all about phentermine
this drug will help you lose weight but it can't do it all alone, you must step up your physical activity level as well as choose lower-calorie foods.

I've increased my physical activity and I've cut my calories. What I was wondering about is, I feel fine on 700 calories a day but the web says it's 1,200 minimum. Is this going to cause me some sort of problem?

it is not unknown for the body to turn down its metabolic rate in response to prolonged calorie deprivation, thus sabotaging weight loss efforts in addition to causing profound fatigue. if you find your weight loss plateaus or even reverses you may have to do the counter-intuitive thing and raise your intake back up to 1200 calories daily. but for now stick with it until that happens. your exercise at this point should be walking "like you're late for work" IOW in a hurry. do this for at least a half-hour daily. you will also want to build some muscle which doesn't require a health club, just do body weight exercise such as pushups. you might eventually want to consider biking and/or swimming laps in a fractional Olympic-sized pool. be sure to eat around 30% of your daily calories as protein. the majority of the rest of your diet should be-

*greens and other veggies [NO potatoes or corn]
*beans
*onions
*mushrooms
*berries
*seeds

salad should be the major meal of your day, make it a large salad with some high-quality fat in it to help your body assimilate the micronutrients in the veggies, either coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil. you can mix the seeds and onions and beans into the salad in addition. I have followed a variant of this diet and have lost about 20 pounds so far.

Thanks for the advice. I might try some swimming at the beach and I can even start biking now that I've found an abandoned bike in surprisingly good condition. I didn't know that I had to eat particular foods, I thought it was just less. No potatoes? So I guess carbs are bad. I've eating two weetbix for breakfast so I guess that's too many carbs.

it is not like all carbs are bad, just the refined ones as well as things that metabolize quickly such as potatoes and corn and white rice. limit quantities of those 3 in favor of things like quinoa and brown/wild rice and slow-cook oatmeal. sugar is not your friend.

Don't I know it. I already cut most of the sugar out of my diet years before I started trying to lose weight. Something about having diabetics on both sides of my family. After I learned to like coffee without sugar (you can taste the coffee better that way anyway) and switched to diet soft drinks.

Now I've stopped having caffeine because it could interfere with the phentermine. Also had to give up the medication I've been on for eleven years. Although whether risperidone made my life better or worse is impossible to determine.

Quote:
Phentermine, a contraction of "phenyl-tertiary-butylamine", is a psychostimulant drug of the phenethylamine class, with pharmacology similar to amphetamine. It is used medically as an appetite suppressant. It is approved as an appetite suppressant to help reduce weight in obese patients when used short-term and combined with exercise, diet, and behavioral modification. It is typically prescribed for individuals who are at increased medical risk due to their weight.

I'd say to go back to your GP and insist on more guidelines.

Otherwise, the keys to successful dieting are:

1. Eat Less.

2. Exercise More

3. No excuses.

4. Continue indefinitely.

I looked into it alittle to help stop binge-eating at night. I decided to try the seizure med Topamax instead & it helped me break the habit with self-control & I'm no longer on it. But while I was doing my research I went on the Phentermine website & found a supplement called Phen Caps. It's supposedly good for people getting off phentermine to help keep the wight from returning. It does help me some but I only take it 1ce a day instead of twice. It helps with my appetite a tad & I feel a tad more energetic & less tired. It's expensive thou witch is some of why I only take it 1ce a day. Here's the clinky link for it.
