I want to know a fancy, scientific description for stimming. THis way, when I'm tapping my fingers repeatedly and the person next to me gets annoyed and asks why I wont stop, instead of saying "Stimming", I can say something more technical.

Sterotypy [ster-ee-uh-tahy-pee] is the formal word for it. Repetitive motion to offset anxiety from sensory overstimulation.

Can you redirect your tapping somewhere else? Like on a quiet surface (leg, arm, etc)? You may not be able to control the action but you can control it's environment.

EDIT:
Self-stimulation. Repetitive movement.. a function related to sensory input.

So you can say, "Sensory input" instead of "stimming"..

I get into repetitive utterances all the time. Today, when I was in my car, I kept saying over and over and over again, "I'm poor." I did this, with variations, for miles.

That word makes me feel like a bigot. Like I'm sterotyping people
