Ive recently got into fasting and have found it very life altering.

It makes me feel very calm and blissed out and I physically feel very well and eases my intestine pains.

Im interested to hear others experiences :D

I've just done it for a 24-48 hrs from time to time as a way to control rheumatoid arthritis flares. It is remarkably anti-inflammatory. I suppose that wanton inflammation is a natural place for the body to cut back on energy expenditure.

For true fasting, check AngelRho's old but still somewhat recent posts. sometime in the last month or so he wrote a mega-long post about his 40 day fast. I can't remember exactly but it is probably in the first or second page of his old posts. Maybe he'll rewrite it if he sees this thread but it was a pretty lengthy post.

My experience is far more limited. I found intermittent fasting through the Paleo internet community. It really helps with the arthritis flares. It isn't a cure but it makes them hurt a lot less.

Thanks I shall look for that post.

I started doing weekend fasting but am now doing it every other day as its so much more comfortable.

Thats interesting that it is so good for arthritis, it seems a brilliant money free, drug free cure all.

How does it help? I think it would be bad, because after a few hours or so, your body goes into starvation mode and store more fat from the food, so it wouldn't help with weight loss in the long run? I was taught that fasting is not eating anything, if if you haven't eaten in 40 days, you would die from starvation, I guess unless you were overly obese, because if I'm correct, the body starts using stored fat as an alternative fuel source, if you have not eaten, but if you eat, it will store it up, because it doesn't expect you to eat again anytime soon.

I use the Melaleuca Access bars that unluck fat and burns it first, for energy. At least, it says it does. Eat that on am empty stomach, and after 15 minutes, it works, I don't know yet, because I haven't notice any change, but I also been consuming a lot of calories. Foods seem to be so rich in calories.

I do alternate day fasting. Apparently the starvation mode stuff is over blown and your metabolism actually increases if fasting for a limited time.

Properly done there is actually some good science behind it. Just make sure you get some advice.

If it wasn't for the fact that I struggle to keep weight I'd do, it.

These sites have lots of useful info

https://forum.fastday.com/

I think its best to do the things which suit you best.

Its been transformative for me, I really suffer with bingeing when upset/stressed so its helped me really much to fast when I have an appointment or social visit as it makes me calmer and stops me bingeing all evening. All other 'diets' dont work for me as I undo their good in a few hours binge after a stressful event, but with this Im able to keep calm and not eat.

I manage to fast fine whilst cooking dinner for 4 kids and have energy to run round after my toddlers and walk atleast 4 miles a day (I live 2 miles from the shops) so I think it does not effect me negatively. I sometimes get confused/muddled in the evening when Im tired but my toddler and baby dont sleep through the night (they kindly alternate waking) so I think that makes it more hard than it would be if I was getting normal sleep.

Perhaps you could try a 4 day fast as that has the most health benefits, I definitely want to try to do that at least yearly. I think the fact that the Drs conducting the research are making fasting part of their lives is very telling.

What does "very telling mean"?

it means they believe the results of their research is very significant, that it makes such a difference to your health that it is worth doing.

For example if researchers into sugar all suddenly gave up sugar it would be 'very telling' into what they thought about the effects of sugar.

So, fasting isn't about not eating, it's about having alimited things to eat?

I have a problem with that, living with my parents. My parents are weird, and they don't want me losing weight. so if I don't eat, they get after me. My mom cooks me food that I know is irristable, like hot dogs, and stuff. I wish I lived on my own. I tell her that I don't like process foods, and that I'm eating healthy now. They say, they they like it too (the processed foods), which they hardly ever eat the balogna, and hot dogs.

My folks, especially my Mom, eats a lot of stuff with high calories and sugar, she bakes a lot too. When she made the sugar cookies, I only had a few, instead of a bunch, like usual.

I have not fasted in years. It is easy for young people to fast but when we get old and develop routines and habits it is hard to make changes like that. When I was in my early twenties I fasted a lot, the longest period being a full month, liquids only, and running five miles a day, plus work. The most I have been able to fast in the past few years is maybe 24 hours.

The longest I've fasted for about 28 days straight, mostly with liquids though and not solid food. And I only do this on occasion and only because it helps me save money when in a financial bind, but I don't like doing it. The only thing I would upfront though about doing this, is to get a doctor's OK before doing any sort of fast, and to NOT try a water only fast as that can easily be extremely dangerous. There are so many ways of doing a fast wrong and so few of doing it right.

I'm not saying this stuff to be a killjoy, but simply to urge you to be careful as there haven't been many studies on fasting and it's effects on the body. As such, it is largely unknown territory. Plus if you ever come across this stuff, many fasters think it's going to rid their bodies of 'toxins,' which aside from a few substances the body already does quite well anyway. The 'toxin cleanse' stuff is bogus.
