Is it true when the sun bleaches your hair lighter it's irreversible?

It's not true.

When I was younger, my hair got bleached blond all the time; it got darker during the winter, though--to a sandy brown.

I would think it is irreversible for the bit of hair that got the sun-bleaching, yes, but as new hair grows that didn't get exposed, that hair will of course be unbleached and its normal color. If you keep your hair short and have regular trims, the bleached hair will keep getting cut out until it's not there anymore and new hair is all you've got.

On the other hand, if you have long hair and more of it gets a bleaching from the sun, it's going to take longer for that bleached hair to grow out/get trimmed up, and for the new growth of unexposed hair to grow out.

You could try a hair colorant that's closest in shade to your natural color, to darken the sun-faded hair.

It must be true. I grew up with auburn hair and it sunbleached into ginger every summer. Now, it is almost completely white. I amn't entirely certain that it has anything to do with my age. :D

LOL. My hair is "dirty-blonde" (I prefer to say "straw colored") I am almost 40 and my hair is getting lighter! I have been wondering if in actuality some of it is turning white but I haven't noticed because it has always been light. I have looked hard, though, and still no white hairs. Then I saw a friend of mine (same hair color as mine) and could actually tell the difference between the blonde and the white. Haha. I still have some time yet. :D

But, OP, no. The sun-bleached hair grows out. :(

My hair is half- gray now....I wish my 'bleach-blond" from my childhood and adolescence remained!
