How long should you use a treadmill for so it does not have any bad effects on your joints?

I don't know too much myself about when and after how long damage can occur, but i hope this can be helpful in some ways:

there are two schools of thought on the issue- anerobics versus aerobics - the former says that you should do interval training on a treadmill, meaning go fult tilt boogie for 1-3 minutes [90+% of max heart rate] followed by 1-3 minutes of coasting, repeated up to 10 times [called "interval training"] - the latter says that you should run for at least a half-hour at a pace that makes you break a sweat and brings your heart rate into the aerobic zone which is generally determined by age, the older the lower the zone. different exercise gurus say different heart rates, the standard advice being to subtract your age from 220= your desired heart rate in beats per minute.

I would say it is important to go to a running shoe shop and get properly fitted for running shoes as wearing the wrong trainers is often a culprit for running injuries.
They check your gait and various other things.
Also, HIIT is very effective as a way for training.
I always found I was more prone to injuries when on a treadmill as opposed to running outside.
But, the longest I have done on a treadmill is about 40 minutes.
Outside, I have managed 80 minutes before.

there is a point of diminishing returns regarding aerobic exercise, above which your rate of injury and cessation of further benefits meet in the nasty middle.
