I don't know how true this is, but there was a discussion on another forum about the Pacific Island countries. Someone said that they had survived by eating small amounts of food for generations, and thus tended to have low metabolisms. When high-calorie diets, such as from the U.S., were introduced, the people gained massive amounts of weight.
