A little history.

I had a knee injury (right knee) in 07 I'm sedentary so sadly all these years later it's still "weak" and gives out on me and I fall.

I started on an exercise bike a few weeks ago which sort of helps not sure if it does medically making it 'stronger' or not? After starting this say 5-10 min. for 2 days on the 3rd walking a department store I fell hard and bruised both knees. I pulled back on exercise although I feel it felt better although from the fall the bad knee feels "numb" like it's not even there.

Is that normal?

Lastly it's weird sleeping in until 8-10 AM groggy angry rush to get stuff done.

The past few days 5AM feel alive alert ready to get my day going.

The rest of my family think I'm crazy lol

I don't have a job to HAVE to get up that early to get to work or anything just would like to be more productive vs. rushing around to do house chores during the day to rush and get them done before mom gets home at 5PM.

Also during the school year I hated some days 7AM have to wake up to take the little sister to school others days 10AM really threw me off.

It's shocking to me 5AM I feel "good" not OMG! great but "ok"

My dad thinks I'm crazy lol.

Also another exercise question.

Should I eat before exercising or before?

(I tried 15min. on the bike but was sickeningly hungry so only did 10min. and made a bowel of cereal.) Did 5AM coffee though BTW.

Maybe take it down to 5min. so not to weaken my knee but I'm confused. I thought exercise made *insert body part* better AKA stronger etc.?????

The department store fall was new I hadn't fell in years since the 07 incident and knee surgery (some lazer thing) so the fact that bettering my knee = fall and injure it scares me!

What if I fall again and need a new surgery?

Or a knee replacement?

We are going on a cruise soon so am considering taking my knee brace or cane since there will be a lot of people and different "ground" As an Aspie I'm clumsy and trip over cracks sometimes. I believe this is what happen at the department store but I question did the bike weaken or strengthen my knee?

Sort of confused and was hoping some fitness Aspie "experts" could point me in the right direction thank you fellow special interest fitness Aspies :-) lol

The pain then numbness in your knee after the fall is a "normal" response to an injury which is when your body is no longer functioning as it "normally" should. I know that's not what you meant... give it a a week or two and if there is no improvement go to the doctor.

Taking your brace with you on vacation is a great idea. Some NFL teams require players at certain positions to wear knee braces whether they have had an injury or not.

I would suggest trying to walk for at least 30 min. everyday or something more intense every other day. While the bike can and will eventually strengthen your knee it can also cause imbalances in the ankle. I'm not saying don't ride the bike for a work out just make sure to balance that out with calf raises(stand up on your tip toes with or whithout extra weight) and heel-toe-rockers(pull your toes to your shin if you need extra weight for that you are "F"ing diesel).

As for eating before or after working out you are going to have to try both and then decide which is better for you. A workout and diet program is an experiment with a sample size of one. That would be you. So keep a journal as detailed as you want it to be of what you eat, what exercises you do and most importantly how you feel.

Now as for falling and injuries. As you progress your exercises will get easier if you are doing them consistently. So depending on what your goals are you are going to have to increase the intensity and complexity of your exercises during the workout just to maintain the level of fitness. Falls and injuries can and will happen. You just have to accept it take the recovery time then start all over.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any follow ups you may have.

Yes thanks. Now to check if my brace still fits lol :-) Or I can be like Dr. House and use my cane! (No vicodin or pain pill issue for me though) :-)
