I've had beer in the past, and it tastes like crap. So, with that said, the question is why is it such a popular drink in most countries around the world? Post your explanations here.

Not all beer is crap. Crappy cheap American beers are crap. I drink craft beer if I drink it at all, and some are really good. I prefer IPAs, stouts, and porters.

Because some people like the taste of beer -- or they like the taste of some beer. And because it contains alcohol.

Probably because admitting it actually tastes horrible marks you as a sissy---if you want to look tough, you have to like it.

I don't drink it to look tough. Although I think I'm allergic to it now, so I don't really drink it too much anymore. I actually like the taste of some beers.

I never really liked beer or alcohol much at all. It's personal preference really. Plus in my view- a lot of people just drink that stuff to get trashed, wasted and whatever.. in a bad attempt to forget their problems. So the taste generally doesn't matter to them.

I agree, except in my experience it's not usually to forget problems - rather it's apparently really fun to be drunk.

I used to get drunk in order to socialize, not to forget my problems. I was under the mistaken impression that I became good at socializing when drunk. In actuality, I was just socially awkward without being anxious or aware of it.

Of course, nobody expects too much from drunk people, so social mistakes can be written off as being caused by the alcohol consumption.

Agreed that actual beer tastes like cr*p, but not all alcoholic drinks in general taste bad.

I'd suggest trying alcoholic drinks that are designed to taste like soft drinks and such.

I'm personally fond of mixed vodka drinks.

All alcoholic drinks taste like crap to me. At best, they taste like a bad version of cough medicine.

Beer is fantastic. It tastes great and it doesn't get you too drunk like wine or spirits. Even crappy beer is pretty good as long as it's cold. Craft beers, of course, are incredible. There is no better beverage on the planet.

It took me quite a while to figure this one out myself - it's exactly what I did when I left home and went to University. I dropped out in the end because of all the money I threw away on it, and lectures that I missed etc.

However, I am rather a fan of a good pint of ale. I live in an area that is spoiled for small breweries, the variety of ales I can get locally is really rather good. I prefer the darker ales, Northern British bitters through to stout and porter. I never was a fan of paler beers very much, though - too much hops and too little malt, they taste like sucking on a penny!

It definitely was an acquired taste - I remember not being tempted by relatives' beer as a kid because I didn't like the flavour. I started out drinking cider and shandies, something a bit sweeter, before first drinking beer in order to savour it.

Beer is an acquired taste. I didn't really like it when Ist tried some. I don't mind the taste of some beers thou I hate the taste of light beers. I mostly drink when I'm in a social situation where alcohol is available & I drink to help relax. I also would very occasionally drink beers at home to help relax or when I was doing something with fine motor-skills; I have a tremor disorder that acts up when doing things with fine motor-skills or am nervous & alcohol can help alittle. I only every drank one or two at a time & I take my time drinking them. It makes me tired thou & I think I would fall asleep before I would ever get drunk if I were to drink more.

What I don't know is what the point is in acquiring a taste for alcohol. Oh, well, it's probably a way of making the point that you're all grown up, so noöne can stop you from drinking it anymore, and also that you're tough, rather than a sissy who worries about something as trifling as health.

Beer is more than just alcohol, it's civilization.
