I am nearly 5ft8 and weigh 150 pounds. I am athletic though.

Tell me why someone who is for example who is 6ft and 210 pounds might be able to beat me up in a fight?

Physics. More mass and greater strength means more force behind each punch.

Smaller people can compensate with quickness and precision - just make the first few punches count.

Better yet, don't get into fights with people bigger than yourself.

Size gives you a lot of advantages in a fight that make up for you not knowing how to fight and not being in the best shape, if you know how to fight and the other person doesn't then you are definitely at advantage to a point. There is a reason why there are weight classes in boxing and MMA.

What about height classes?

Bigger size and taller height will always be an advantage in any melee-range martial arts style combat, assuming that skill-levels between the two people fighting are the same, but the higher the skill-levels of two equally skilled fighters, the less and less the size and height-difference will make a difference, although the taller guy still has more advantage of being able to land more techniques at greater range whilst the shorter guy can still gain other advantages through other means depending on his type of training. Personally, from my experiences, when both fighters are equally skilled, with the exeption of significant differences in size (such as a 7ft man against a 5ft dude), such to the point where they are both countering all of each other's attacks, the one with the higher level-of-endurance will win. I speak as a qualified martial arts instructor by the way.

The taller you are, the longer your arms are. Additional weight also gives you a greater degree of leverage.

They might not be able to beat you up in a fight.

But if they could, it's for the very same reason someone smaller could beat up a bigger person:

They are a better fighter.
