Well I smoke about ten cigarettes a day. I know it is strange from someone as educated as me, but I did the dumb idea of trying it once (thinking I will not get addicted) only to realize... oh s**t.

Anyone have any tips on going cold turkey and what not?

I have the dirty habit too. I've given up a few times and then started again. Cold turkey is the only thing that has worked for me in the past.

The main thing is you have got to want it more than you want to smoke.

I suggest you start making notes of the pros and cons of continuing to smoke.

Once you have a full and comprehensive list sit down and take a serious look at it.

Assuming you want to stop in light of the overwhelming evidence in front of you. Organise the list in order of precedence, make multiple copies and put them where you will see them. Print it out on a (credit card sized) piece of paper, put it in your wallet (assuming you use one) every time you think about buying some, you will have to look at your reasons why you shouldn't. Even if you fail, put a card into the pack of cigarettes, for a constant reminder every time you go to light up.

Good luck.

I'm a heavy smoker and I love it, not interested in giving up.

Have you considered an e cigarette? - you can adjust the strength for the nicotine and you miss out the tar, but also the anti depressants.

Smoking a pipe is difficult to learn, but the smoke isn't inhaled.

Used to smoke. Quit 3 times in three years, last time being two years ago. Ultimately, the desire to smoke has to be gone if you were to succeed. The more you want to smoke, the less success you will have in stopping. Try reading "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr

Hey Sebastian,

I say, switch over to nicotine tabs (2mg) for a few months to a year. Also, if you don't do it already, start sporting as frequently as you can, eg jogging an half hour every day, this will decrease your appitite for a cigarette.

I was never "cool" enough in middle school or high school to start smoking.

20 years of smoking before I finally gave it up for a vaporizer.

I used a high nicotine juice for the first two years.

Now, four years later, I am down to bare minimum.

I have no desire for those dirty nasty cigarettes.

I do still like to puff my vaporizer.

I started smoking when i was 13, have been a 1 (big-)pack a day smoker at the end and switched to vaping 1,5 years ago. Started out with 18mg, and am now down to 3 mg. If this trend goes on, im completely off nicotine by the end of this year, but i dont rush it since nicotine itself isnt even the bad thing in smoking anyway. For the first year vaping also has grown into a special interest of mine.

Peace
TK

Yes, vaping is very to do with gadgets and shiny things and thus can be of interest to aspies.

Try Wellbutrin, I've known many smokers over the years who have taken that and had their cravings completely dissapear allowong them to quit.

Just do it and tell yourself no. That's what I did. It sucks for a week. Don't be a b***h if you really want to quit. anyone can quit anything if they really want to. But you have to be willing to endure discomfort.

I'm sure this advice doesn't apply to everyone but when I began to try to quit smoking, I found that the most effective way to mitigate the discomfort of withdrawal was to replace smoking with activities that roughly "scratched the same itch," for lack of a better way to articulate that. I realized I was smoking largely because it was a solid excuse for me to withdraw from social settings and/or the general discord of daily activity and just chill out, so I decided to just go for walks around the neighborhood or just aimlessly pace back and forth in my backyard with a nice, delicious cup of coffee. My caffeine addiction is another issue altogether but it's at least much less destructive than smoking half a pack every day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I started smoking five years ago. I like it and don't want to quit. I did try an e-cigarette thingy but I don't like it. Too mechanical.
