Why did my eyes go this colour?

When I look at my eyes (indoors) they look a brown or dark colour.

However once me and my friend had some flash photos taken. In the photos my eyes looked a bright green colour and yet my others friend who have dark eyes there eyes just looked a brown colour in the pics.

Can you explain why my dark eyes looked a bright green in the flash photos yet my friends dark eyes just stayed the same colour?

Perhaps it was the angle of the shot, or the lighting. There are any number of reasons why this could happen.
