I'm not sure if I'm the only rugby fan on WP, but just in case I'm not here's the thread for it. Any team, any kind of rugby, any comment.

I think England have a chance on Saturday. Not as good a one as New Zealand but better than an outside chance and I think Wales have a better chance against South Africa but not if they play like they did against France.

I like rugby----but I don't follow it too much.

I used to watch rugby on TV when I was a little kid. I know some of the terms: like "try" for a score, and "scrum" for what we call the "huddle."

The only thing I don't like about rugby is that they don't allow the forward pass. It's very much like 19th century American football.

Rugby participants wear very little protective equipment.

Hi Kraftie welcome. I wasn't expecting much American input although your team is getting better. Have you been following The Rugby World Cup?

Err...I think you mean early American football is like rugby lol.

I haven't been----but I should. Rugby is an honorable sport.

Yep. Early American football was very much like rugby. It became very different around 1900 or so, when people started using the forward pass more.

Do you like Rugby Union, or Rugby League, or both?

Migosh, the US is getting Shellacked!

In American football, play is stopped after each tackle. And there’s the forward pass. And football has much more armor. And other subtle things.

Otherwise, the two sports are really quite similar. A Try is exactly like a Touchdown.

In football, you can kick the ball through the goalposts after a touchdown for one point. Or run it in for two points. A touchdown is six points.

A rugby fan would easily understand American football after watching a couple of games, especially if watching with somebody knowledgeable about American football.

Rugby and American football are much more similar to each other than cricket and baseball.

Definitely union Kraftie.

What a day :D I've no telly so I have to wait until the program is put onto itvplayer before I can watch which usually happens about 10-30 mins after it's finished. Kick of was at 9am so I estimated that it would finish by 11am and then there would be the chat at the end for about 45mins so it should be put onto ITVPlayer by 12am. I start work at 2.30 so have to leave the house 2.05 at the latest. But it didn't go on until 12.20, I was going nuts. Every time the clock stopped on play I was screaming at the screen. I was literally hovering out the front door ready to run as it finished.

But it was worth it :D :D :D :D :D

In the UK Rugby Union and Rugby League is usually, but not always, divided by geography and social class

I think, in Rugby League, play stops after a tackle, sort of like in American football.

In Rugby Union, though, play seems more or less continuous.

Being a peasant, originally from the south, I got to choose which rugby to support. I chose union. Back then it was amateur (in name). I like to follow countries competing more than clubs even if neither is England.

They've been talking about rugby x during the World Cup. Apparently ITV will have some on next week. If they put it on ITVPlayer I will take a look. Anyone familiar with it? It sounds like a cross between Hong Kong Sevens and wheelchair rugby, both of which I like.
