In light of a new medical breakthrough in cancer detection, Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier said Monday that so-called “liquid biopsy” blood tests are helping doctors accurately detect the killer disease.

“Instead of taking a piece of solid tissue, it’s just taking a blood test and looking for tumor cells in it,” Saphier told "Fox & Friends First." "We’re now having more and more evidence showing that some of these blood tests are actually very accurate in detecting cancer.”

The new blood test, in the works since 2017, can detect 20 types of cancer with a very low misdiagnosis rate, according to new studies. The test, which scans blood for tumor-specific DNA, identified early-stage cancer in more than half of 138 patients with the disease, U.S. researchers reported in 2017, according to Reuters.

Saphier said that the blood test is not commercially available and is currently limited for use in research and clinical trials.

Expen$ive, and therefore not likely to be approved by insurance companies that are more concerned with their bottom line than with the health of their clients.

A quick search on the Internet showed that one company Bioceps is already performing liquid biopsies for cancer. In terms of expense, they indicate:

Quote:
Most health plans cover our testing and it may be determined that the patient may have a balance (co-pay, deductible, or co-insurance) based upon the individual benefit design of the patients policy. In addition, some health plans reimburse the patient directly for the laboratory services when the laboratory is an out-of-network provider. If a patient does receive a payment for the test from the health insurer, or has a co-pay or deductible owed, please forward the payment to:
Biocept, Inc., File 1689, 1801 W. Olympic Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91199-1689
Biocept Financial Assistance Program (BFAP) – is a program designed to aid those patients who have unique financial situations based upon income, expenses or financial hardship. By completing the application process, it is possible to reduce, or eliminate the patient’s financial responsibility. For Physicians and clients, please contact your representative for assistance. For patients, please contact our billing department at 888-492-4723.

This sounds like normal insurance jargon and does not appear to be dramatically Expen$ive and outside the norm.

Maybe ... but Kaiser Permanente seems to have not yet picked up on this technology. What are the "Most health plans" they mention?

Since this company is based in California, I would guess that they are referring to plans available in California. Since I think you live in California, you might try giving them a quick phone call and ask them.

My particular health insurance company covers the entire cost of biopsies (no deductible, no copay, no coinsurance). But since this technology is rather new, liquid biopsies, might not be included until research has proven this technique.

My girlfriend's dad very recently had that test done. The university hospital kept wanting to check him for cancer & kept saying there was one test they HAD to do but they kept putting it off after he fasted cuz they noticed some issue with getting the tissue. Then the hospital suddenly said they could just do a blood test for cancer. We don't know why they didn't just perform the blood test 1st instead of having him fast a few days for nothing when he was already malnourished.
