The Quest For Black Belt.

By Nate Schulte

I have been a fan of The Karate Kid movies. Ever since I saw the first one as a four year old boy. I got into martial arts for the first time when I was eight. I studied Shorin Ryu Karate, but had to quit at age 11. This was due to the building going out of business. I was a brow belt and had two belts to go. For years I wondered if I could ever make my black belt dream a reality.
I was a bullying victim at school almost my whole life. I also was verbally abused at home. I was a very angry kid. I wanted to learn how to fight back, because I drew the line with many of my bullies. I kept going despite what I had to go through. I did eventually try to fight back, but got in trouble more. I learned to cool it. However, during my senior year of High School I fought back because some one kept flicking my ear, after I asked the guy to stop, he never did and I tried to get a teacher involved. She said she couldn’t do anything. So I ended up pounding my fist in his face and he left me alone. Another time I was assaulted in front of a teacher. Teacher did nothing, so I recalled one of the kicks I learned in karate and I used it one the guy.
I graduated High school, but still was getting bullied at work. The scars from the past were also causing me to have panic attacks. I found out later that I have Asperger’s Syndrome. I was very upset with the test results came back positive. I was trying to find a way to help me channel my anger from everything.
I tried other styles off and on since 2005. I had to quit because of being laid off from a job, a teacher scamming me and another building going out of business. There was a building in a nearby town that opened up. I was a little hesitant, because I was going to school online and working a full time job to support myself.
I eventually decided to give this dojang a try and started in March of 2018. I was able to start from red belt, because I earned it from a former Taekwondo place that I went to. I entered my first tournament in 13 years in December of 2018. Took home a silver medal, my best in a tournament to date. I really had a hard time doing my flying side kick to break the board, but I kept trying and manage to break it on my second try. Was awarded my novelty black belt.

On June 7, 2019 I tried for my first degree black belt. I trained for this test outside of the dojang. I was suppose to do one breaking technique with palm heel hand strike. I was shocked to see I had to break two boards. I thought at first I was not going to be able to do it. With a little inspiration from my fellow dojang mate, he told me, to just focus. I focused and broke the boards on my first try. I missed on two kicks for my test, but tried again. I wanted to finish what I started that night. I ended up passing. On July 11, 2019, my first degree black belt was presented to me, two weeks after my 34th birthday.

Martial arts is a hobby that serves as therapy from my past. One of the lessons that I learned is to channel my anger and use it as energy to accomplish whatever goals I set for myself. Whether if it is to try and pass the next test I take or anything outside of the dojang.

To hear my story about being a bully victim, I have a video posted on YouTube. It’s Bully Busters- The Senior Year

The bullying started in 3rd grade. My father then enrolled me in a variety of martial arts schools which then became the center of my life. After a year of training I was capable of managing the bullies. The training continued into my high school years and provided a foundation for a long and satisfying career. It also gave me the discipline to deal with my then undiagnosed Asperger's and OCD.

Cool man. My ex used to say martial arts balances me. I might have an understanding of what she meant, but still I’m not entirely sure.

Martial arts have advantages, like you wrote. And disadvantages

Anyone can hang a shingle. The instructor does not need a background check. Neither do the customers. Felony conviction, psychiatric illness.

Martial arts , time, $$$$, energy

Germs

Dangerous, injury (although not nearly dangerous enough to justify the frequency that idiots have the nerve to ask "are you ok?")

Instructors are not worth the energy it takes to interact with them s**t

A karate instructor had the nerve to ask me "why are you trembling?". Ativan side effects. She didn't believe it. What the f**k was I supposed to do, doctors note? She could have said it was forged. Call the number. The could have said, you hired someone to answer the phone.

Other instructors barked at me for every slightest misunderstanding

Some medical diagnosis are contraindicated to martial arts

Ass holes kept barking at me "relax your shoulder". Lil dipshits. Some people have more pain receptors than you. So what? How about I tell Rolando Morales penis to stop sweating. Why not? I ain't sweating

Some instructors are good at martial arts and bad at "teaching"

Dobok, gi, uniform, double weave, sensory processing dysfunction

Some lil penis purposely do techniques too fast or too hard.

Spoiled upper middle class brats

And numerous other problems
.

Indeed TT, I wholeheartedly agree. The strict adherence to discipline required by the Master Sensei's is often a problem for some students.

It was a long time ago now, but martial arts was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

I grew up with a strict father who was a Navy veteran. The discipline I got from a martial arts instructor was nothing compared to my sperm donor’s verbal abuse and bullying. I also took bullying at school too. My story is on YouTube.

Bully Busters-The Senior Year Victory. Check it out.

One instructor wrote on the waiver "I will obey Don Hughes".

Sounds justified. But it reserves Don the authority to make the customer do things he should not do. For example, don could tell customers to have sex with him.

Some articles on the internet, claim that some customers took legal and civil action against instructors. Sometimes the instructor won the case.. sometimes the customer won.

Precious lil "people" that work as karate instructors have the same, mental illness and felony conviction, as precious lil "people", that do not work as, karate instructor.

Hanging a shingle that says  karate lessons  does not require a background check. Defendants convicted of , murder second degree and, statutory rape, can hang shingles

Martial arts has many advantages to offer

But customers don't get background checks

Since I am physically weak, mentally slow, financially broke, socially awkward, emotionally fragile, it is easy for lil dipshits such as Mike Su to bully me. The wrestling coach did not care. Bias.

But Mike was heavier, stronger, more skilled than me.

Anywhere else Mike's actions would have been basis that, I could legally tattle to nine one one

Your current instructor might not be similar to my former instructors (fine)

But sometimes you don't know someone as well as you assume

Overestimate

Sometimes instructors personality changes. For example schizophrenia

Last year the aikido instructor moved to a different state. Some lil rat bastard took over

Martial arts is not magic, special or awesome

At least, not any more magical than anything (everything) else s**t

I took Shotokan karate classes for a few years as a teenager, and it was a great experience. I'd been getting bullied so badly I was suicidal, and my parents enrolled me in the class on the advice of a psychologist they had taken me to see. I loved it, and it taught me some self-discipline, and increased my confidence. I quit when I started college and never seemed to find the time to go back, however.

I'm glad you've had a good martial arts experience. It sounds like you worked long and hard and have accomplished your goal!

I really took refuge in martial arts when I found it 19 years ago now. Now I can't imagine my life without it. It's how my body moves, it's the way I express myself, it's like air. It just keeps me alive. Going to the dojo is like breathing in and out. It just happens autonomically.

For me martial arts is not about channeling anger or rage. It's not about revenge against bullies. Quite the opposite actually. It helps my mind be still, like an undisturbed pond that reflects a clear image. When I'm in that state I feel like I can see myself and the world around me more clearly.

My folks did say that I would be good at martial arts if I did take it but I wonder if being older and take it would be an issue. I am almost 30 after all and I'm sure it would take many years to actually get somewhere with it ... xD I never did have too much of an issue with bullies but my folks often fear for my safety a lot so with martial arts they maybe able to rest easy a bit.

Some "instructors" just want $$$$

Over and over some dipshit "instructors" had the nerve to tell me that " you are not paying attention"

Effort, efficiency, outcome,

The outcome was small so they assumed effort was low. But efficiency was low.

Ass holes

Then the other instructor had the nerve to ask me, if you have a high school diploma and know what a ninety degree angle is.

So I answered , "no",.

From that day on, nobody told me that I was not paying attention

Eleven years later, this lil dipshit still acts like I am, intellectually challenged

The higirikan dojo "instructor" had the nerve to tell me "move faster!". (Motor retardation. The penis could use some formal education s**t)

After literally two hiccups, Rolando Morales penis had the nerve to ask "are you ok?"

He could not "help" me. He does not have the skills

Before class (not during), I was lying down stretching and reading a book and the "instructor" barked at me. He acted so annoyed, you would imagine that I stepped on his toe. Ass holes

A yongmudo "instructor" said "you're comfortable on the ground" . And I said "ok". Out of control doctor link from uc Berkeley had the nerve to bark at me "what?"

Wrestling coach Greg lines had the nerve to tell me that , someone told him I had bad hygiene

f**k that lil penis

Numerous condescending compliments
.

The ass holes inside the building have the same felony conviction and contagious disease and mental illness as, the ass holes outside the building

Not "perfect character"

Anyone can hang a shingle, legally

Nobody gets a background check

So I started Tang Soo Do recently and this past wednesday after my first official class I sprained my ankle ): Luckily my instructor is pretty flexible but I would hope I don't make a repeat performance considering I have to be out for 3 weeks and have to bring a doctor's note upon returning.
