It's optimal for one muscle group to "take the day off" when it comes to strength training.

Work out your upper body one day, your lower body the next day.

I work all major muscle groups 3 times a week

Not sure if that’s enough though?

It's usually better to do more reps with less weight than more weight with less reps.

One should not, say, bench press every day. Alternate days for the major muscle groups.

depends on your age for recovery speed , i do a full body workout 3 x per week and this works well for me (i lift heavy and do 4 sets of 8-10 reps for each muscle group , when i can easily do 10 reps i will up the weight and drop the reps - chest/back/shoulders/bicep/tricep/legs (push-pull) - the only thing that changes is that each day i will do a different exercise for each muscle group i.e first day chest will be flat press, next day chest will be flys last day incline press (the same applies to all muscle groups with changing the exercise).

just try a few things and find out what works best for you , when i was younger i used to train 4x per week and do an upper lower split - now at 51yrs old i enjoy doing full body 3x per week - make sure you do a good warm up beforehand.

It all depends on your program and what you aim to achieve. I do a full-body program 3 x per week, leaving 48-72 hours between each muscle group. In between these days, I also do plank, cardio and stretching.

This is an excellent program:
