Could someone give me information on the diagnostic procedure for Asperger's Disorder as well as a general cost or waiting period expected for test results?

Depends on who you get evaluated by.

I'm seeing a specialist soon, and was told it'd cost 1800 dollars. =/

Or, I was told my local school was required to do it for free. But they aren't very experienced with aspergers and there's a chance I could be misdiagnosed.

I had two long appointments with a GP who specialised in Aspergers (who was AS herself) and some consultation with my family. Total cost was approx. $400NZ. The whole process from first contact to diagnosis was about 2 weeks.
Find your nearest Autism support group - I'm sure you'll have some sort of nationwide support system - and ask them to recommend someone to diagnose you.
