What's a good, casual team sport?

I want to join a rec league this spring. I was thinking soccer because I played it for a year when I was a kid, and I have pretty powerful legs. There's ultimate frisbee, but I think it would be too hippie-ish.

It is hippyish but don't let it stop you. You'd probably meet some pretty cool people.

Basketball's also fun - its kind of like ultimate frisbee (or soccer).

Not a team sport - but still social and competitive - mountain biking. Especially with the legs. And chicks dig guys with bikes on their cars.

ultimate frisbee's fun. don't get your hopes too high about your soccer ability, a lot of people are really good but don't play competitively so if you only played for a year when you were a kid don't expect to be good. if you go to university lots of them have some intramural sports you could try out like volleyball, dodgeball, that kind of thing.

Ultimate is good since most teams are co-ed in a league and the costs are usually, just show up. Tie-Dyes are optional. I'm probably going to out myself on this site but I'll suggest "Disc Golf" simply because it can be done by yourself or played with others. But, if hippies or pseudo hippies are a turn-off then something a little more mainstream might work.

Disc golf looks so fun!! ! I haven't done it but there's a place near Savannah, GA that has it - its like this funky statepark, public golf course place - complete with the spanish moss in the trees. It starting to get real popular here in Georgia. And the little frisbees are SOOOO cute!

Then there's my favorite - dog frisbee but that's definitely a solo (human) sport. Although you might get to play during half-time at an NFL game!

Ultimate Frisbee is a lot of fun, and is a pretty cheap sport to play. Basketball and Soccer are also pick-up-and-play type sports that can be organized very easily.

Yep, it is fun. There are some good courses in the ATL area and Augusta and probably more. And, as I say to many people, "Give your balls a break, play disc golf."

Do you know any in the North Metro area? Preferably No Fulton?

It has been a few years since I have made it over to Georgia, I'm in Alabama, to play DG (took about 6 years off from playing and a total of about 10 years off from competing). I'm not too familiar with the area except Roswell. Here is a link that lists the DG courses in GA and provides directions and some other information. A lot more courses have popped up over the last 10 years.

Oregon Park, from what I can remember is a 9 hole course geared more to beginners and newbies.

Thanks for the interest and tell your friends. If there is a big tournament in town maybe check it out. It's really incredible to watch someone throw a golf disc 600+ feet.

Awesome! And I live in Roswell - that course is a couple miles from me - right by the Hooch. I knew they had made a bunch of upgrades to the park but I haven't checked it out yet.

Better start practicing! I always play with those cute little frisbees when ever I see them at the Sports Authority.

Volleyball is a very casual team sport. At a high level it can get very intense. Near the beginner level, it's just fun

Don't let frisbee's hippie status deter you--I've found some great athletes at frisbee. Most of them were there because they were athletes who didn't want the "jock effect": having it take up all their time or be crushed when thy don't win. They really do just run around and have fun. It's great.

i hadn't thought about that before but i agree with that lack of "jock effect", at least for me. I find it a lot easier to lose a game of ultimate frisbee than a rowing race, soccer game, or even a board game (i'm pretty competitive, it bugs me when i lose stuff, although i won't appear distraught from losing a board game it does kinda bug me ). it's easier to just have fun with games like that
