hi everyone,

my friend (aspie) has now become my house mate for a while. this is the first time in his life he had his own room/space with a door he can close and lock. he has been here 3 weeks.

he sleeps ALOT. sometimes 10-12 hours. he's going to school so the plan is for him to get up at 7am and sleep around 10pm but lately he's been sleeping from 4pm to midnight or 1am and then up all night and still having to get ready for school at 7am.

he's very disoriented and grumpy when he is tired and has gotten pissy with me when i've woken him up for dinner a few times.

i always assume we should NAP mid-day for a few hours but not sleep all day and then be stuck awake all night when we need to function during school/job hours...

please share your experience ...

thanks!

My sleep is weird. I go from not needing much sleep at all, to sleeping a lot.
And when I do it.. that shifts around all the time.

Currently, I sleep during the afternoon (10, 11, 12-ish), until some time in the evening; typically whenever dinner is ready (typically anywhere from 5 to 9-ish, but usually around 7). Then [sometimes] I'll go back to sleep after I eat, until around 11PM.

This is subject to change... whenever. I don't really seem to have any control over it.

I typically sleep from 3:30 or 4 AM till 11 AM... then take a nap from around 11:30 to 1:30 PM. It takes me a long time to feel tired and also a long time to feel awake.

Same...

For me it's also very variated. Most of the time i go to bed at 1-2 AM and get up at 6 AM.
But I could sleep waaaay longer if it wasn't for my work. In weekends i go to sleep at the same time, but usually get up at 1-2 PM.

I have hypersomnia, and it's not at all unusual for me to go to sleep at midnight and wake up at 6pm the next day. I need at least 12 hours to function. It kind of sucks :?

I have that issue. For classes if i have to finish up assignments sometimes i stay up really late (2-4 AM ish for instance) and i have to wake up the next morning and if only get 4 hours of sleep, i will be cranky the next morning or sometimes i may go in web forums to talk about politics or the economy very often and stay up because of that.
(I usually do this when I am bored in my spare time).

Personally, I usually sleep exactly 8 hours, and am naturally on a pretty regular schedule. But I used to sleep 4 hours, get up and do things for a few hours, and then sleep another 4 hours.

Most people should get 8-9 hours of sleep, but some people need more or less. Also, if the quality of the sleep isn't good, people need more time to get the full 8 hours. People with sleep apnia, for example, may wake up a hundred times during the night. In winter, we're designed to spend more time in bed, with a period of time in the middle of the night where we are 'between the worlds'.

A lot of people are really grumpy about being awakened. My NT partner is like that. I leave him the hell alone <grin>.

Ask him what he wants to do about things like dinner. Also, if he wants to get on a regular schedule, he needs to be a little sleep deprived to be able to sleep at the 'right' time, until he gets used to it.

There's also a normal biological thing that makes people in their teens and early twenties be 'night owls'. Getting up early sucks.

Life-long morning person. Must get 8 hours or everyone pays (ie, I am horribly irritable). My brain checks out at 9 pm and I literally bounce out of bed at 5 am. If I am running more, I may take a midday nap, but that is risky, because I will fall deeply asleep and wake up groggy and grouchy. At those high mileage times I will often go to sleep a little earlier. Good thing that my social life is not terribly active. My nt husband is a night owl and can sleep anywhere, any time. I run in the morning and when I get back, he is just getting up. He is a programmer and artist and does his best work when I fall asleep. The cats keep him company then. The main theme is that sleep time, like mealtime, is a rigid, non-negotiable routine for me.

I can sleep 12 hours a day if I'm not in school or working, but I can also do fine with just 8 hours

My sleep patterns are a mess, often broken up and off the daylight world's cycle.
Unless exhausted rarely sleep 8 straight.

ugh.
my house mate just had another completely sleepless night. he wasn't feeling well yesterday. he slept until 1pm or so. he didn't sleep last nite. i heard him walking around the house all night long (i slept and woke up and slept and woke up) and now i hear him in his room trying to be quiet but it's now 10am...so he's been up for 21 hours already...
i don't know how to help. i've suggested internet curfews, forcing himself to sleep by trying to read, getting up daily at 6am regardless, etc..
the problem is that he has to be in school at 9am most days (one day he has to be there at 8am) and his sleep schedule is interfering with school...
plus, he wakes me up when opening and closing doors and clomping down the hall, flushing toilet, etc.
mostly though, i'm just worried about him because he's so -out of it- for school so often and he wants to do well.

My sleep schedule changes a lot, too. I go from needing little sleep to needing much sleep. When I was in my teens, I used to sleep a lot during the day, too, and stay up all night. Now, my schedule is alittle more n ormal, but I still get up a little late and sleep a little late.

My son has a simular problem with sleep, sleeping up to 12 hours a day, he was recently dx with hyper-mobility disorder , which means you are very bendy ect, it can effect certain areas of the body more,in my sons case he has weak hip muscles, which effect his co ordination , posture & walking, this became more of a problem when he reached his teens & started school. He becomes exhausted due to his awrkward movements & pain specialy in lower back area & legs & became overwelmed by school due to mental & physical fatigue which caused by this condition and now suffers social anxiety & refuses to go to school, ive been reconditioning of certain muscels through excersise is the best cure , but because of his mental health he hasnt been able to do this which has lead to him putting on wait & making his problems worse.
