I had my appendix taken out Monday morning. I've never felt worse pain in my life. I left the hospital Wednesday and have been recovering at home. Any one had an appendectomy? If so, and advice to help me out with the recovery?

i had one when i was 5. Don't remember much, about it. hurt like hell and doctors didn't think it was my appendix until i threw up on one of the nurses. Then they swooped me away to surgery.

As for recovery. Meh, i remember having lots of jello and ice cream, but then again i was 5. Just don't be overly active until it heals. I was more interested that such a thing existed ( an organ that held sand and such iirc)

PS - Gratz on getting rid of a somewhat useless part of the large intestine. Try not to eat to much sand.

I had an appendecotmy a couple of years ago. Was not too bad. Could not drive for 2 week. Keep something by your bed so that you can climb in and out if need be. You may also want to get a device that allows you to pick things up without bending over.

As for having appendicitus, I felt no worse than simply having food poisoning. In fact, the only reason I bothered to go to the hospital is that I had not eaten for 24 hours, vomited anything I could eat, and was still not feeling well.

Thanks. I have a new problem though. My bottom incision is getting infected(surgery was laparoscopic). I have to go back to the doctor tomorrow. I think it's because they didn't give me any antibiotics to take at home.

i had mine taken out a year today. Mine was done by key hole so my stomach was pumped full of carbon dioxide.

The only thing that i can suggest is lots of bed rest. I hate bed rest but it really did work so find yourself a bundle of films and books and rest up.

You know what's great? I ended up getting an abscess full of pus. I now have a 12in catheter in my intestines and a drain coming out into a bag thing that's hanging by my leg. My doctor f****d up big time. I think my parents are gonna sue.

infection is a common side affect of any surgery, anytime there is a cut on your body there is a risk for infection. When the infection is not caught and left go, is when it leads to a abscess. So while I am very sorry you are having the complication, I dont think your going to get anywhere if you sue.
Hope it clears up and you get better soon

Thanks, I hope so too. I also want to get this drain out of me. The catheter is extremely painful at times. The doctor made the mistake of mentioning something to another doctor about the other doctor having drained many abscesses for him over the past 20 years. I might be able to use that to my advantage. lol

Maybe just drink fluids for a few days or so. You'll be bed-ridden anyway, so you aren't going to starve. It'll probably be nicer for healing to not have solids dragging across the inside!

I had to get the vacuum, too, because it was pretty far along and had already split open when they got to it.

Had an abdominal surgery - hysterectomy - a couple years ago. Huge tumor, they had to open up from the belly button all the way down, so lots of risk of infection. Especially since I was/am going it alone and quasi-homeless. Living at the time in my beater RV in a dusty junkyard with only a cold garden hose for water.

But knowing that risk existed and was made greater by the conditions I took extra care to keep everything clean. I'm feeling lucky now I did not get any infection and actually healed a lot better than most it seems. I think the key is that I got moving as much and as soon as I could. Careful not to over-do, but even more careful not to under-do.

I've found in life that with nearly all injury/illness, the real healing comes once I start moving about again. Not easy for a couch potato like myself, but good for the healing!

Good luck and good infection-healing vibes to you. I've been to infection-town with other things and it's absolutely no fun.

I'm sorry you have to go through all that. I will pray for you.
