I am an aspie who also has depression and mild anxiety issues. I sometimes think I also have bipolar disorder...I know a lot of kids around my age feel that way but yea. I get really bad mood swings and my psychiatrist asked me one time if I had a history of it in my family which idk...

You could have Bipolar, but I can't diagnose you. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder at age 8, but not with Aspergers until age 16. For me, the Bipolar side was more apparent since I'm very high functioning for an Aspie. For you it could be the other way around.

Hmmm, I am starting to think that I am bipolar, twould make sense why I can be elated one second and pissed off the next. Wish i could get a diagnoses for it though.

What's stopping you from getting a diagnosis? Money? I would have thought getting a diagnosis for a psychological condition would be easier than getting a diagnosis for a neurological one.

It's defnitely worth asking your psychiatrist for a full screening test. There should be a couple different written tests of varying lengths available.

I doubt my parents would want me to go in for a diagnoses because I kinda use my autism diagnoses (though they try to stress that it is a "spectrum" disorder, and should not treat the label....the label kinda of helps) but they think I use my autism disgnoses as an excuse. Sometimes I do to get ahead (like to not do dishes  ) But for the most part, I try to overcome my problems and I just like to complain about it because it's a real problem. Anyways, they'd probably prescribe some type of pills and I dislike pills. I spent my childhood cycling through ADHD meds and those wrecked my body. Plus, those meds might have animal parts in them and I don't need something else to keep track of when I go to college.

Is there not a way you could get a diagnosis without your parents assistance? Wouldn't you rather know whether a medical professional thinks you have it or not by having an assessment? I can relate to wanting to overcome problems without assistance and that is definitely an ideal mindset. Even if you got a diagnosis though, it wouldn't mean that you are obliged to take medication, you'd just have the option to if times get tough and you feel you need them temporarily or whatever. I can imagine ADHD medication wrecking your body, the medication used to treat that condition is somewhat 'hardcore' in terms of side effects and possible long term damage.

Probably not, I am still on their healthcare plan. Hmmm, it would be good info but again, a lot of my life is controlled by my parents atm. Yea, I will probably just end up reading a bunch of articles about it and trying to fix a little bit at a time. I've lived with it thus far, should be minor enough that I can fix most of it myself. Well, maybe. If they think I am carzy enough, they could enforce it....that would be my worst nightmare..being force-fed meds. 8O :x Yea, it messed up my sleep and my stomach from first to fifth grade.

I'm 15 and I was diagnosed with Asperger's last september. I think that I'm bipolar but my psychiatrist keeps telling me that I only have an "expansive mood". I don't know what that means but if any one does please let me know. I'm new to this site btw.

Hi musicaddict95,
Expansive mood is defined as "lacking restraint in the expression of feelings" or feeling grandiose or important. It's one of the criteria for bipolar disorder, but is not the only criteria. Maybe your doctor is saying you don't meet enough criteria for bipolar disorder?
