I just read a story of a woman who has a condition called Body integrity identity disorder who had her therapist pour drain cleaner over her eyes to make her blind because she "truly believed" she wanted to be fully and permanently blind.

EDIT: The woman is on disability and the therapist lost his medical license in the state of Illinois.
According to her friends she "overcame her mental illness" by going blind like she wanted.

The story
"For most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, USA, has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled. Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes. As a young child she would spend hours staring at the sun in a bid to damage her eyes, acquiring her first white cane aged 18 and becoming fully fluent in braille by the age of 20. Tired of being secretive due to the stigma surrounding the condition, Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help."

So, I'm curious on what your thoughts of this are.

I personally have blindness-varient BIID myself and did also speak to this lady a few months ago. While a lot of people do not understand BIID, I can tell you that it is a very stressful thing to live with.

Feel free to contact me on the Asperclick forums where I am more active, and at my blog at micheal65536 dot wordpress dot com (it won't let me post a URL).

I don't regularly watch news, but a week ago I saw this on the TV while waiting for a doctor's appointment, in the waiting room.

Seems the neurotypicals are having a field day sensationalizing this to the hilt.
Shows you how pathologically desperate they are for mouth-watering content.
Mouth-watering for them, at least.

I personally have no opinion on this topic.
If she wants to be blind, or her body is telling her to be blind, well ...
let her have her cake and eat it too.

I do wonder if she (the BIID blind lady) lived in medieval times ( with no govt programs or social support, let alone braile) if she would still be so adamant and willing to blind herself. As in those times, it would be immediate death.
I'm sure very few blind people lived very long in those times.

She may well have chosen not to make herself blind, but I'm quite sure that she would have still had the stress to deal with. She might well have committed suicide.

invisible,

or maybe she wouldn't have.
who knows.

everybody has to play the sh***y hand their dealt in this life.

Point is, that's HER life. And we have no right to use her and sensationalize her situation to the masses in order to exploit her. Sad that we're so mindless and bored with our own lives that we have to pick on a poor individual with BIID to make ourselves feel better, or at least less bored than we usually are.

I saw it. She said ever since she was a young child it felt right to her to be blind so it wasn't a phase.

I suppose she is happy now even though the majority of us cannot understand.

I read a story about a women with BIID who wanted to be paraplegic and tried to get herself injured. She started to act it instead by wearing leg braces and using a wheelchair and has asked surgeons to make her paraplegic but I think non would do it.

I have read that story as well and she had in fact found surgeons to make her paraplegic but it was going to cost her a lot of money and according to subsequent research that I have done it seems that the surgeon that was going to do it has since passed away.

I'd rather be dead than blind.

lol that's the same thing my mother said. I still can't understand why people think that, even if they don't have BIID.
