If I could get rid of one of my five mental disorders, I would probably pick NLD. It cancels out a lot of good Asperger's traits, like having a high IQ and being good at math. Instead I had to struggle through high school, not knowing why I couldn't do math, fill-in-the-blanks, or essay questions. I never had any idea what I was doing wrong when it came to studying; I tried so many different methods, and none of them worked. I was diagnosed with NLD last year, and so far I've been able to avoid taking classes with fill-in-the-blanks and essay questions, although I had to drop my College Algebra course because I was going to fail it.

Who else has NLD and has faced similar struggles?

Grammar Geek- yes I most likely have NVLD and did struggle with math in middle school and had to have a tutor for math back then. I took college algebra and went to a tutor and was able to pass. I never had trouble with fill in the blank or essay questions, but I am a nerd and studied a lot. Never need more time for tests and just learned differently or that is how I look at it. I did take neuropsychology test and significant discrepancy between Verbal which was 112 and Performance or whatever the visual perception part is called and the score was 82. A 15 point difference between the two is considered significant. I learned that I am an auditory learner and auditory memory is better than visual memory. Was told I may not understand nonverbal cues and no wonder I have felt socially awkward all these years. In middle school I was in the spelling bee and needed a tutor for algebra.

I have impaired visual and auditory memory skills (tried studying both ways) and no matter how much I studied, I couldn't do fill-in-the-blanks or essays. It was so frustrating, especially since it was a high-achieving school and I felt inferior to a lot of the others.

And yeah, I've won multiple spelling bees, but even with a math tutor, I failed math my senior year in high school and would've failed last semester if I hadn't dropped the class.

I was diagnosed with NVLD and major depression in my early 30's as well as well as 6 years ago in 2010. I am also an auditory learner and my auditory memory is better than my visual memory as well. I had tutors for math as well as chemistry in high school. I have considered going back to college to finish my degree and if I do I will take advantage of accommodations. Most likely a note taker and books on tapes. I am socially awkward too and find social situations to be anxiety provoking.

Yes tutors can help in college and so can tape recording the lecture, rewriting the notes and studying for exams 4 to 5 days before test.

Good luck in college.

I have dyslexia & I struggled aLOT in school. I'm an auditory learner but I get details confused/mixed up due to my dyslexia. It also cancels out the stereotyped strengths of Aspergers for me.

I have a nonverbal learning disability as well, diagnosed with it back in 2010. I also have generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and dysthymic disorder. I wish I could get rid of it as well as I believe it contributes to my anxiety issues. We're said to have smaller amgydalas in a study that compared the brains of children with Asperger Syndrome and children with NVLD.
