This is very simple.

If a person's brain is unusual in one area, it's likely to be unusual in other areas.

Unusual IQ = unusual brain.

Based on what I read, High IQ does lessen the severity of mental illnesses, but it certainly doesn't make you immune to it, even serious ones like schizophrenia. A study discusses it in the Schizophrenia Daily News Blog. (due to my newbie status I can't post the link, but you can find it quickly using Google)

I would rate my panic disorder as serious. The same clinic that diagnosed me tested my IQ at 119 on the WAIS, with above average executive functioning and working memory. Who knows how bad I would be if I lost any more points.

Anywho, I think some of these studies need further examination. Does higher IQ really mean less severe symptoms, or simply better able to mask them from the interviewer? I would also be reluctant to take any IQ test from a person suffering from psychosis seriously, considering that their symptoms would most likely interfere with their ability to take it in the first place, especially as the disease progresses.

Sometimes I feel a little crazy but I'm a pretty rational person most of the time my IQ is apparently 154...but I think people make too much of it. I don't always do the best on test and kids with lower IQ's often answer and understand things sooner than I do. So I don't really feel special. I do sometimes feel like I might be insane...talk to myself a lot and so on. But whatever...

Wow. 154 is very high.

I have found that the sign of a truly intelligent person is they tend not to realize their own intelligence... which is a little ironic.

I think the reason is that people are intimidated by smart people and smart people are often bullied for it, so they internalize that a lot of the time.

My intelligence is above average but certainly not at your level... you have a gift, don't waste your potential.

I admit IQ is not everything, but I wish this society valued it more. Intelligent need to make themselves known, and put themselves out there more.

To answer the OP, I think it is basically scientific fact that there is an association between mania/psychosis and creativity. Beyond that, I am not sure if there is an actual link to pure intelligence or not.

Not everyone with a mental disorder has an high IQ; for example, people with AS can have high IQs, sure, but they can simply have avarage IQs, too.

About me, I scored 127 from the last test the psychiatrist gave me; it's a medium-high result, but it's not very high.

I asked a really good psychiatrist about this once and in so many words he basically said that most people with a serious metal illness tend to be on the slower side.

People many times perceive me to be on the 'slower' side and people who know me tell me I'm very intelligent...my theory is somehow I process things slower or maybe its just all the crap going on in my head that distracts me so I seem slow. So perhaps there are various reasons for the slowness other than being dull of the mind.

So far I know people with lower IQ and higher IQ than the average are more often mentally ill.

My IQ is 99 in language and 138 in logic.
But I score very different in every test, I also scored once being high intelligent in the language IQ.
Everything tested professionell.

I don't care that much. I would prefer having a "normal IQ" and NOT having my problems.
