I think that those of us with mental illness should come out of the closet to as many people as possible. We need to let people around us know that we are functioning around them, that we are good parents, good neighbors, good co-workers and we're not going to murder them. It's time!

I don't think I would make a very good parent at all, whether I am a good neighbor kind of depends on the perspective of other people, but I don't really interact with neighbors very often and don't even know the names of anyone who lives around my house. Also, I see no reason why I should have to convince people I won't murder them, it's stupid that is what they think mental illness indicates anyways.

I think mental illness will always be a hard thing. The ways of coping with it have probably gotten better over the years. I think people's acceptance has gotten better. I have told people that I have Asperger's and they are supportive - that's not to say that they understand, which they don't, but they don't hold it against me.
